Chapter

Fifteen

The next morning, Vergotix showed up much earlier than I expected.

The sun had barely risen over the city of Old Harbor before Mira alerted me that the CDU president was standing outside our cabin.

“He was really serious about us leaving at first light,” said Mira, still in her pajamas. “Half the girls are still sleeping as it is.”

“Make sure they’re awake,” I said. “I’d hate to have to start a fight right now, but we need an audience with the king.”

Mira winced. “I really don’t like this, Jeremy.”

“Neither do I, but we’re not leaving. Not yet, anyway.”

I didn’t want to hurt anyone, but I wasn’t going to let Vergotix boot us out of the country. For that reason, I made him wait until all the girls were awake before stepping out onto the porch of the cabin.

Judging by the look on his face, Vergotix hadn’t slept much last night. I was expecting a frosty reception this morning, but something was entirely different about his tone as he closed the distance between us.

Before he even acknowledged me, he gave Mira a letter. “These letters arrived this morning. You’re the one whose father is Mathias James, correct?”

“Yes, that’s me,” said Mira, looking surprised. “I’ll take those.”

Vergotix handed them over, but then his heavy eyes fell on me. “I’d give you a minute to read it, but we have no time. Everything has changed. I’m revoking the order to make your team leave Cozocomo immediately. I need your help.”

I could read between the lines, and I had a feeling I knew what had happened before I could even ask the question. “What changed? What happened last night, Vergotix?”

The president swallowed hard as he struggled to meet my eyes. “There was an attack last night. At the new Champion’s League dungeon. Hell, it was more than an attack. It was a bloody massacre.”

I winced, knowing the rest of the story instantly. “How many are dead?”

“All but one,” said Vergotix. “And the only reason he’s alive is because I think their attacker thought he was already dead. But he’s the one that saw what happened. He said it was a middle-aged woman that did the deed. She took one nearly fifteen divers in their prime, at very high levels, and slaughtered them to the man.”

I gulped heavily. “Amelia Vann. She’s getting more powerful.”

Vergotix shook his head in disbelief. “How is this possible, Jeremy? You told me she was strong, but those guards were no slouches. They were formidable—some of the best that Cozocomo has to offer. How could she get past them?”

“The emerald that she has is getting stronger,” I said. “It absorbs the powers of other divers. Tell me—this man that lived. Has anyone thought to check this stat sheet after the attack?”

Vergotix paled. “You know?”

“It’s their calling card,” I said. “They absorb the powers of other divers. All of those dead divers’ powers have been pooled together and are now accessible to Amelia. She just got a whole lot stronger.”

“We have to do something about this then,” stammered the president.
