…Can and Will Be

Used Against You

August 2, 12:30 AM

INVESTIGATORS WERE NOW armed with Anderson’s statement, Shaina’s identification of Anderson as the mean man who carried off her mommy, and an explanation of why his blue Bronco was described as black with black wheels. It wasn’t much, but the evidence was enough to connect 26-year-old Anderson to the abduction of Piper. On August 2nd, just after midnight, a warrant was issued for his arrest. At 1:30 AM, DCI agents went into the John Morrell packing house where Anderson was working. A supervisor led the agents to their suspect, who was wearing work clothes, cowboy boots, and a Camel cigarette baseball cap. Without incident he was read his rights, and his hands were cuffed behind his back. The charge was for the first-degree kidnapping of Piper Streyle. The man who obtained so much enjoyment handcuffing his victims, now had the tables turned. News of the arrest spread through the packing house like a fanned grassfire, with wildly speculative guesses as to why he was taken away by detectives. A stunned Anderson was placed in an isolation cell for his own protection. Bail was set at $500,000, which he was never able to raise. Unbeknownst to Anderson, his feet would not see the streets of freedom again.

Word of Anderson’s arrest hit the local news circuit with Argus Leader headlines reading Robert Anderson Arrested in Abduction, Suspect Went to Streyle House on Day of Abduction and Streyle’s Husband Thrilled. Like many criminal sociopaths, Anderson was able to lead a double life completely hidden from family, friends, and coworkers. Shortly after his arrest, Anderson’s wife, Elaine, stood by her man. Chain-smoking Misty cigarettes, she spoke with the media:

“This is part about the bad times in one’s life. He’s innocent. His eyes tell it all. The authorities want someone so bad that they are just going after one person. Robert is scared, and we both cried. He didn’t kidnap anyone,” Elaine stated emphatically. She offered up an excuse for her husband, claiming he was out at the Streyle house because of her desire to enroll their children in a church camp. It was an improbable story that had the opposite effect and made it appear that Anderson didn’t even have a single alibi. While Elaine worked the day shift at Morrell’s, a neighbor took care of their three children, ages 5, 3, and 1. Anderson had another son from his first marriage but hadn’t seen the boy for three years. Elaine explained it away by professing that her husband loved this son so much that he didn’t want the boy to be in the middle of a fight so chose not to see him.

She did her best to portray him in a positive light. In jail he read technical engineering magazines and had plans to build his own car. He had hobbies and enjoyed playing video games and collecting comic books. In fact, his collection expanded to the point that Elaine insisted he stop buying them despite his knack for being able to predict which comic books would grow in value.
