Chapter 14

Jaxxon didn’t know whether to laugh or throttle Freddy or hug him and empathise with being called slurs. “You do realise that makes you sound like a right wanker.”

“Yes. I’m a privileged fucker. I know.”

Empathy won. “It can’t have been easy having to listen to people disparage your identity.”

“No.” It was amazing how one little word could carry so much weight.

“It would be easy to tease you about your upbringing, but I also have a strong sense of smugness about my own. It’s a blurry line between I’m better than these people and the idea that I understand why others aren’t able to achieve big things.” His parents had been good at helping him understand this difference, that if he was too superior in his attitude, people would actively bring him down and more importantly, his own arrogance would prevent him from seeing the whole picture. He was forever seeking that balance between confidence in his abilities and the egotistical lack of awareness caused by arrogance.

“Oh. I never thought of it that way. I was always just pleased that when I was able to get away from school to go racing. Between the karting circuit when I was teen, and then getting into S3 when I was sixteen, I missed a lot of school.”

“But you graduated?”

“Yeah, I guess. I got my GCSEs and officially left school.”

“Sixteen is the leaving age, isn’t it?”

“Yes. My team insisted I get my GCSEs as part of my contract, and I loved racing so much that I did it for that reason only.”

“It’s just a piece of paper.” Jaxxon didn’t really believe that; for him, his degrees had opened doors that would’ve been firmly locked to him otherwise.

Freddy scoffed. “Says the guy with double degrees from England’s most prestigious university. It’s not just a piece of paper and saying that insults both of us.” Trust Freddy to get to the heart of the matter succinctly.

He swallowed. “Yes.” He probably should take some time to understand why he wanted to dismiss his own achievements to make Freddy feel better about his lack of education, especially when Freddy specifically said he was content with what he’d done.

“It’s valid to take different paths. You don’t have to disparage or dismiss your path to make me feel better.” Freddy reinforced it and Jaxxon wanted to protest that he wasn’t doing that, when it was exactly what he was doing.

“Yeah.”

“You’ve just said that you loved school. I was the opposite. I couldn’t wait to leave school and I thought I was so mature when I got my seat in Series Three.”

“Hold up. If your S3 team insisted you get your GCSEs, then you must’ve been only sixteen? You were the minimum age when you got your seat?” He’d read that somewhere but to hear it directly from Freddy highlighted what a great achievement it was.

“Yes. My connections helped and of course I was a silly teenager with far too much ego when my fellow drivers were—”

“Aren’t most S3 drivers
