“Great. No complaints. Chloe’s walking around now and

into everything. Barry’s job is going very well.”

“So?”

“So?” Steve made a silly face at her.

“When are we going to get together as a family again? What

are you guys doing for Christmas?”

“We’re booked solid. We have our office gala and we’re

probably getting together with a bunch of other gay couples for a

big dinner as well. I’m not sure the details yet.”

“So? No time for us?”

“If you think I want Dad sneering at Mark and Alex for an

afternoon as he imagines killing them, you’re insane.”

“He won’t hurt them. Dad’s learned his lesson.”

Choking at the absurdity, Steve tried not to yell. “He

threatened to kill me in front of Jack.”

“He did not.”

“Fine. Whatever.”

“It was probably just his knee-jerk reaction.”

“I can’t take that chance with the men I love. Sorry, Laura.”

He rose up, tossing the pillow down on the chair. “I need to

shower. Can we discuss this again some other time?”

“Sure, Steve.” She appeared let down.

“Look, I don’t mind if you guys come over for dinner

sometime.” He walked her to the door.

“Us guys?”

“Yes. You, Barry and Chloe.”

“What about Mom?”

“No. If she finds out where we live she’ll tell Dad. No.” As a

warning, Steve added, “And don’t you blab.”

“I won’t. I haven’t up to now. You know you can trust me.”

“You said you wanted to keep out of it.”
