In addition, while Ferro’s approach is carefully designed to listen to the patient’s feedback about each and every intervention, nevertheless, Ferro continues to adopt a position of “knowing” that retains a certain degree of unacknowledged authoritarianism. All of us, from all schools of thought, may respond at times with authoritarian styles, but what we are examining here is an aspect of authoritarianism that is not personal, but rather implicit in the theoretical approach itself. What we mean is that Ferro is very open to hearing his patient’s unconscious communication of feedback about the impact of his interpretation as premature, and is open, attentive, responsive, and seeking correction. Nevertheless, he then hears his patient’s response (for example, the description of his detested mother-in-law), and he concludes its significance on his own, unilaterally. While he listens to the patient’s next association, and from that point of view he remains open, there is an endless loop where with each turn he decides what the patient’s response must mean.
