Chapter Thirteen

“Ellona’s alive,” Maalik stated, and yet he didn’t appear overjoyed.

He wasn’t alone. After a day, night, and morning of incredible wonder, Daava felt her happiness shrinking.

“You know that dragon?” Babette asked, turning to glance at Maalik.

“We both do,” Jeebrelle softly interjected. “That’s Ellona. One of the thirteen.”

“A sixth dragon mage?” Babette blinked. “Okay, this is starting to get a bit crazy. I thought there were only supposed to be four horse dudes of the apocalypse?”

Jeebrelle addressed Maalik. “It appears your wish came true. You brought her back to life.” Her last statement held an incredulous note.

But Daava quickly countered, “Impossible. Necromancy is the most difficult thing to do and requires much sacrifice, not to mention a fresh body. If she’s alive, it’s because she was never dead.”

“It appears our assessment of those who survived might have been flawed. I take it you didn’t know?” Jeebrelle still only addressed Maalik.

He roused himself from his shock enough to say, “No, I had no idea. I saw the note Ellona left by the bottomless crevice and assumed she’d taken her life.”

“We all did.” Jeebrelle paused the image on the odd contraption and did something to reverse time so that they could all clearly see the dragon. Big, but nothing close to as large as Maalik.

“Are you sure that’s your Ellona?” Daava peered more closely, trying to find a link or familiarity. Had her magic somehow brought Ellona back?

Maalik had no doubt about the dragon. He pointed to the screen. “Where is that place? How do I get there?”

Babette had the answer. “Depends on how fast you want to get there. Can’t exactly take a plane, unless you’ve got a passport. Flying while in dragon form? You’re looking at eight, ten hours, not counting rest stops. If by car, train, or bus, a few days probably and you’d still have problems at the border without an ID.”

“I’ll need directions. Can you show me where this Toronto is on a map?” Portals required firsthand knowledge of the location and care in creating them lest a person materialize inside a wall. A horrible way to die.

He leaned down, and Jeebrelle showed him a map so he could plan a route. Daava left, returning to the other room to pace, agitated, and yet she couldn’t say why.

Having followed, Babette caught her scowling. “Why the frown, dudette?”

“I’m not frowning.”

“Then you’re smiling upside down.”

She huffed. “I don’t mean to frown. I’m not sure why I’m feeling anything at all.”

“Don’t tell me you’re going to miss the big jerk?”

The very idea surprised. “Is that why I am irritable of a sudden?”

“Let’s see, how do you feel about him leaving?”

Daava grimaced. “I shouldn’t care. Yet I do. Why?”

“You like him.”

“I do, and yet I shouldn’t. He is my sworn enemy. He wants nothing more than to use me for the wishes I can grant.”

“Are you sure that’s all he feels? I got the impression he was into you.”

Daava blinked.

“Into you as in the way a guy likes a woman,” Babette explained.
