The Healing Fields

The Healing Fields were not what Billy was expecting.

They were full of flowers… but that wasn’t the strange part. The strange part was that the flowers were enormous. Bigger than trees. Large enough for dragons to land on. Billy felt as if they’d been shrunk and let loose in a garden.

After landing between two huge sunflowers, with stalks so thick Billy couldn’t have wrapped his arms around them, they made their way through the forest of flowers. Overhead, huge petals fluttered in the breeze, blocking out light. One fell off and drifted down dangerously close to Dylan’s head.

‘Careful!’ said Charlotte, tugging him out of the way. ‘Who knows how much that thing weighs?’

‘How come we’ve never seen the Healing Fields before?’ said Billy.

‘Our realm is bigger than you can comprehend,’ said Spark. ‘There is much you have not seen or experienced.’

‘And usually Buttons is able to provide the healing that we need,’ added Xing, giving the green dragon a sly look. ‘But he met his match with the dragobees.’

‘Pardon me!’ Buttons huffed. ‘I’d like to see you try to heal a human child who’s been attacked by dragobees! I did my best!’

‘And you did a very good job,’ said Ling-Fei reassuringly. ‘Xing, you need to apologize for teasing Buttons!’

Xing rolled her eyes. ‘Fine. I am sorry you could not heal the boy entirely.’

‘Xing!’ said Ling-Fei.

Xing flashed her teeth in a sharp smile. ‘I am sorry that nobody here appreciates my wit.’

Billy couldn’t help but laugh. ‘I think that’s the best apology you’re going to get, Buttons.’

‘I’ll take it,’ said Buttons, raising his snout in the air. ‘And I’ll remember this the next time you need healing, Xing.’

Xing cackled in reply and playfully whacked Buttons with her tail.

‘The dragobees are no laughing matter,’ said Tank, his low voice echoing all around them. ‘It is lucky we were close to the Healing Fields. Buttons may have saved the boy’s life, but the sooner we find the right plant to fully heal him, the better.’

‘How will we know which plant is the right one?’ said Billy, staring up at the enormous flowers.

‘It will be obvious,’ said Spark. ‘When we reach the plant we seek, we will take the leaves and wrap Jordan in them. That is what we do for dragons who are injured, and it is what we will do for him.’

Jordan still sat secured to Thunder’s back, watching everything happening in silence. Even ever-chatty Midnight had quietened down, but she stayed close to Jordan’s side.

‘So we’ve seen tiny dragons; now we’re walking through gigantic flowers… Should I be prepared for a giant ant or something to come crawling out of the earth?’ said Lola, stepping carefully around another stalk.

‘In this place, you should be prepared for anything,’ said Billy.

‘What about dinner? Is that going to be prepared anytime soon?’ said Lola.

‘Glad that somebody asked!’ said Dylan. ‘Usually I’m the only one who remembers important things such as when it’s time to eat.’

Ling-Fei laughed. ‘It’s true!’

‘I don’t even know what time it is back home,’ said Charlotte, rubbing her eyes.
