Chapter Five

Xanran was right when he said none of his group would be content with sitting idle. The prince took joy in getting to know all members of the Crystal Clan and could be found chatting to somebody at all times of day. Often he was roped in working alongside the person he was conversing with, so Xanran had seen him repairing clothing, carrying wood, using his magic to levitate training targets for archery practice and more.

Mexi on the other hand was determined to learn to fight better. From what Xanran had seen during their time adventuring he had street flair to his fighting style, but that meant he lacked some of the fundamentals and techniques of proper structured learning. He joined in the communal trainings and later pestered one of the scouts into showing him some tricks he could do with his dagger. Xanran heart leaped a bit each time he saw the elf twirling his blade in a dangerous way, thought he wasn’t sure if it was because he was worried the elf would lose his fingers or because it looked too goddamn sexy.

Then, there was Rogan... and his favorite pastime took Xanran by surprise.

Today, like many days prior, the large warrior was covered in kids. There were four of them and they were using him like a tree. A little elf boy, no older than five, was sat on his shoulders squealing in delight at the ride, while a dragonling girl was swinging from his arm and a dragonling boy was clinging to his leg. There was also a bit older dragon kid who followed Rogan all the time and asked thousands of questions. Rogan answered all of the patiently.

Maybe Xanran shouldn’t be so surprised Rogan was so good with kids. After all he become Saainren’s guard and one of his primary minders, when the prince was a little boy. But it was still interesting to see how Rogan wasn’t just good with kids but genuinely liked spending time with them. At first the parents and other Clan members were apprehensive and didn’t leave him alone with the little ones, but a month in their stay Rogan had their seal of approval. This Clan didn’t have dedicated child minders like Xanran’s old Ink Clan did, so normally the parents spent a lot of time with the kids and when they weren’t available whoever was free took over for them. To be honest Xanran thought that while his previous Clan’s model of raising children as a Clan worked well for some (like Xanran, who has lost his parents at a young age) it failed to build as strong child-parent bonds as this Clan managed to do. Even now, despite having what amounted to a free babysitter, they still were spending more time with their children than the Ink Clan’s parents ever did. Still, they were grateful for the help and Rogan was regularly invited by the families to eat with them or offered small trinkets in thanks. But nothing could beat the gifts from the kids.
