CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

The six remaining trolls quickened their pace, all charging at once. Their footsteps thundered over the ground, and Kaine scrambled to his feet and bolted, his steps unsteady. After the blow he’d received, he must be in pain. He dived to the ground, aiming for the next troll’s heel.

Samara shot at the troll, but because of the way it was facing, it was impossible to get him in the heart. The arrow hit the troll in the face, managing to annoy him further. He spun, swinging his fists low, and knocked Kaine straight into other trolls. Samara’s brow furrowed with worry. She grabbed her last remaining arrow that she had prepared with magic and shot it at the troll who’d hit Kaine. It landed in the troll’s backside, and his back straightened as he paused momentarily and yanked it out before he slumped immobile to the ground.

Another troll spotted Samara and charged toward her. She quickly nocked a regular arrow and shot it at the troll’s eye. He swiped it before it hit him, knocking it off course. Whether it was by sheer luck or skill, she didn’t know.

She nocked another arrow and found it challenging to decide whom to shoot next. One troll was nearly on Kaine and another almost upon her, with others behind them. Samara hit the one closest to her first and hoped Kaine could deal momentarily with the one pursuing him. She continued firing arrow after arrow, finding it hard to get a direct shot at their hearts.

Kaine was obviously doing his best to fight with his knives, but he was regularly hit because his weapon needed closer contact.

Samara reached for another arrow, only to find that she had shot her last one. Quickly, she scanned the ground and found one that had been pulled out of a troll. She picked it up, nocked it, aimed it at the next troll, and managed to hit it in its heart. He crumpled to his knees before falling face-first onto the ground, leaving four remaining.

Kaine struggled to move, his body badly bruised and his face swollen around his left eye and chin. Each movement was slower and sloppier. A troll walloped Kaine in the side, and he landed on his stomach, groaning loudly enough to be heard from ten feet away.

A troll swiped at Samara, and she barely dodged it, feeling the brush of the wind against her face. Kaine struggled to get onto all fours. He grabbed a knife from his back sheath and threw it at the nearest troll, aiming for its heart. The troll dodged at the last second, anger plastered across his face, and he headed straight toward Kaine, ready to take revenge.

Samara tried her magic again. Even if she could only use it to call her whole arrows back, it would help. Her chances were slim, and her actions were fueled by desperation. Nothing happened.

In a moment of clarity, she remembered the small canteen of poison from a gympie-gympie plant she had collected.
