CHAPTER 14

THE BLOOD STRAIT

“The Blood Strait?” said Dylan. “That sounds horrible.”

They were back in their protective suits, astride their dragons. Preparing to go to the Blood Strait.

Billy didn’t say anything out loud, but he agreed with Dylan. Everything about this plan, separating from the dragons and going into unknown territory, sounded terrible. He knew it was the only way, but he wasn’t happy about it.

“The Blood Strait starts on our land and connects the Forgotten Sea to the Frozen Wasteland,” said Tank. “While you are searching for the Ice Pearl, we will go after the Diamond Pearl. If we have six of the eight pearls, we should be strong enough to take on the Dragon of Death.”

“How will we find you again?” asked Billy, trying to keep the panic out of his voice. It wasn’t just being away from the dragons’ protection that made him nervous. He didn’t want to leave Spark when she was so vulnerable to the draw of dark magic. He’d promised he would help her. How could he do that if they were separated?

“Do not doubt the strength of our bonds,” said Spark. “It will guide us to you and you to us. As it has done before.”

. . .

They flew back over the land, keeping watch for any signs of the Dragon of Death. Sure enough, more slain dragons dotted the landscape, their gold blood pooling beneath them, and purple plants growing around. Each dead dragon added more urgency to their mission, and they flew on even faster. Eventually, they came to the banks of a blood red river.

The Blood Strait.

“Is it actually blood?” asked Dylan, looking horrified as they landed near it. The red river bubbled and frothed and looked distinctly uninviting. Farther along, it picked up speed, the rapids smashing against the riverbanks.

“It is not dragon blood,” said Xing loftily. “You know we bleed gold. It smells and tastes of the blood of lesser creatures, such as yourselves.”

“It feels . . . alive,” said Ling-Fei, edging closer.

“And so it is,” said Tank. “It is one of the veins of this land. And it is forbidden for dragons to enter it.”

“This is as far as we can take you,” said Buttons.

“Are we meant to swim in it?” demanded Charlotte. “Billy’s a pretty good swimmer, but I bet even he couldn’t swim in that. And there is no way the rest of us could. Do you see how fast that current is? And something tells me even with our suits on we wouldn’t want to come in direct contact with that.” She wrinkled her nose in distaste.

“Your instincts are right. The blood is thick and unpleasant to be in. And more importantly, you would be unable to hold your breath for as long as you need to when it goes beneath the ice into the Frozen Wasteland,” said Spark. “There is another way.” She paused and gazed into the distance.

“Surely the smell of the humans will have attracted it by now,” said Xing.

“Attracted what?” said Billy, immediately on guard.
