Chapter Twelve
Rose
My heart hammers so hard I’m worried anyone near me can hear it. In the slew of crazy things I’ve done in the past few days, this is by far the craziest. I wish I could come in armed, but that wouldn’t set the tone for peace and conversation. I still have my knife in my boot, but that won’t help me much if an angry mob of Hunters attack Sebastian. He saved my life; I will protect him at all costs.
We landed a couple miles away from camp for safety and walked the rest of the way. Sebastian would surely be attacked in his dragon form. Now we approach the outskirts of the Hunter territory perimeter, waiting for the right moment to walk in. It’s six in the morning now, shift change, and the early risers will be just waking up. My plan is to wait until most of them are up and have eaten breakfast before we make our move.
I spot Bill emerging from his trailer, stretching his arms above his head and yawning. An uncomfortable sinking sensation has found a place in my gut. What if he doesn’t listen to me? What if they don’t even give me time to explain? I spent so much time convincing Sebastian that wouldn’t happen, that they’d give me a chance, but I was convincing myself that entire time, too. Hunters can be unpredictable—hence why I’m waiting until after breakfast. A recently fed Hunter is almost always in better spirits than a hungry one.
Now and then crazy thoughts creep into my head. Is this really happening? And why? What is it about the beautiful shifter next to me who makes me want to risk everything I have to be with him in peace? For centuries the Hunters have only dealt with those shifters who pose a direct threat to us or have done wrong by us. In Adele’s case, I was tasked with taking her out because she is the heiress to the Selene Coven crown and fortune, with plans to eradicate us completely upon ascending.
It’s all a bit surreal, but I must stay focused.
“Perhaps we should act like I’m your prisoner,” Sebastian suggests, as though reading my mind. “If they believe I’m a captive and subdued, they may be less hasty with their weapons.”
I nod. “We’re also not going to tell them we’re…you know…” I trail off, blushing. “We don’t need them to know about our sexual relationship.”
He grins, but says nothing.
But it is great.
A voice different from my own echoes in my head. Sebastian’s voice, in fact. I turn to him, startled, and he has a surprised look on his face.
“Did you—?”
“Hear that?” he asks, incredulous.
“What was that?” I reply, putting a hand to my head.
“That was me,” he mumbles, frowning. “I needed to see if it worked.”
“If what worked?”
“If you could sense my telepathic thoughts. All shifters can, but I wasn’t sure if you’d have the ability.” He reaches out and touches my face, ever so gentle, with the backs of his fingers.
