Remo’s aircraft never did end up landing at the private airport in the Pittsburgh suburbs, and Smith called to explain something about a strange reading on the air-traffic patterns that was most likely the disguised radar ping of the giant helicopter that had absconded with the apatosaurus.
The explanation really didn’t matter. What mattered was, Remo Williams was going to Whershee, Pennsylvania. By the time he had deplaned and grabbed the waiting car, the trail of the mysterious aircraft had left Whershee again—vanished.
Remo’s only option was to nose around the site where the helicopter had taken the apatosaurus. With any luck, the big, dead dino would be there somewhere. Maybe they accidentally dropped him at the chocolate factory.
Remo had liked chocolate when he was a kid, of course. The nuns at the orphanage in New Jersey had never understood what good chocolate could possibly do for growing boys, so Remo actually didn’t get candy very often. When he was an adult, with his own disposable income, he bought a candy bar now and then and thought he was getting a rare treat. Then he entered the military, and he had all the repulsive, heat-stabilized chocolate bars he could ever hope for, and he got sick of them in a hurry.
Actually, learning to dislike chocolate in the military was a blessing in disguise, because now, of course, he couldn’t have any. Chocolate was one of the many, many foods that were not on the Sinanju diet plan.
“Hello?” Remo said, strolling into the wrecked interior of the old factory. This was not just any chocolate factory, this was the chocolate factory that started it all. The plaque on the front of the brick structure claimed this building was a Registered Historic Place. This was the very factory where Wilder T. Whershee created the first chocolate bar and gave birth to the modern candy industry, as well as a century of the escalating Type 2 Diabetes epidemic.
The factory had been modernized since the 1890s, but a lot of the shiny steel machines had been wrecked very recently.
In fact, one of the machines had burst and spilled tons of chocolate all over the factory. It was still warm and liquid below the surface. Remo had to walk lightly to avoid breaking the cool outer shell.
The police had not yet arrived, but there was somebody else in the plant. Remo followed the sound of distressed breathing.
“Burns burns burns.”
“Hi, Mr. Burns. I’m Remo.”
“This stuff burns. Get me out, please.”
There was a man sealed up inside a shell of thick chocolate. Remo tapped the surface, and the brown shell split apart and slid off of the top half of the prisoner’s body. The man’s T-shirt came off with the chocolate, which also depilated his chest, arms and back with a ripping sound. The man’s flesh was lobster-red. The subsurface chocolate was still steaming hot and liquid, and the man hastily withdrew his legs from it.
“What the heck happened here?” Remo asked.
The panting, red-skinned man said, “Machine broke. It spilled on me.
