Pairs of wide end tables or chests with closed storage turned sideways, so that their backs are against the sides of the sofa and the drawers are facing out to either side, take up less room, and you’ll still be able to use the storage space.

BE CREATIVE

You can transform an end table into a coffee table by cutting it off at the knees, so to speak. The standard height for a coffee table is 16 to 18 inches (although if it is frequently used to serve food it can be as high as 20 inches), whereas an end table is generally 24 to 30 inches high. If you don’t consider yourself “handy” you may want to get someone to do this for you. And if you’re going to put the table on wheels (I believe that making furniture easily moveable is always a big plus), remember to buy the casters first and consider the height they will add when you’re deciding how much of the leg to cut off. Try to match the metal finish on the wheels—chrome or brass—to other metals on the piece itself or other pieces in the room, and be sure to get those that are appropriate for your type of floor (i.e., either carpet of hard flooring).
