Gen X workers everywhere are seeing the consequences of cost pressures that are producing a thinning workforce, a speedup for those who remain, and a degraded quality of work due to outsourcing or the replacement of experienced union labor with inexperienced, cheaper, nonunion employees. The combination has had a toxic impact on work satisfaction. Nationally, the younger the workers, the less satisfied they are, with “82 percent of Baby Boomers reporting they are happy in their field whereas only 74 percent of Millennials agree.”29 According to a March 2017 Gallup poll, as described by a CBS journalist, “Of the country’s approximately 100 million full-time employees, 51 percent aren’t engaged at work—meaning they feel no real connection to their jobs, and thus they tend to do the bare minimum. Another 16 percent are ‘actively disengaged’—they resent their jobs, tend to gripe to co-workers and drag down office morale as a result.”30
