EMMA FLOATED INTO work on a high of sexual endorphins and career promise.

It took only one spilled coffee and Claire to ruin her mood.

She was searching online for the bar in Pittsburgh called Church Street when she heard Claire’s voice bark at her from a few feet away. “Gideon, in my office. Now.”

Emma jumped and spilled her coffee in her lap. On her white skirt.

“Damn.” She glanced at it ruefully, but quickly closed her browser before Claire saw what she was doing, given that pursuing the stalker angle wasn’t exactly what she was supposed to be working on. At all.

Standing up, she looked around her desk for napkins to magically appear, but when none did, she just gave up on the stain and followed Claire, who had already marched off in the direction of her corner office, which had sweeping views of downtown. Emma’s cube had sweeping views of the door to the men’s restroom, which was a precarious position to be in after lunch each afternoon.

“Shut the door,” Claire said in a tone that made Emma nervous.

She did as she was told and hovered in front of Claire’s desk. Her boss spun her monitor around so Emma could see that Claire had been reading the article she’d submitted that morning on the photo shoot, with only a brief mention of the disappearance of the clothes. Unsure why Claire looked like she had a severe case of constipation, Emma just stood and waited, her palms slick with sweat.

“Is this your story?”

“Yes.” Did she think she plagiarized it?

“There’s nothing in this article. It’s 250 words of nothing.”

That had been precisely why she had wanted to add the stalker angle, but Emma remained silent. From experience, she knew Claire wasn’t finished.

“Kyle mentioned you had drinks with Ian Bainbridge last night.”

“Yes.” Her heart picked up its pace. Why would Kyle tell Claire that? And why did it matter?

“You were pressing him for information on his stupid stalker, weren’t you?”

“No.” She hadn’t been. Not really. It had been more of a conversation than an interview, technically. Had Claire gotten a complaint call from Ian? He hadn’t seemed annoyed, but you never knew when it came to artists.

“Did you ask him about it?”

“Sure. He actually offered a pretty solid lead that I don’t think the police have ever followed up on.”

“Did you ask him about his future plans after he’s done with this collection?”

Whoops. “No.”

“Did you ask him about the impact of digital technology on his art? Now that people can zoom in on the internet and identify individuals, has there been any backlash from employers? Has he had problems with copyright infringement?”

Uh-oh. Now she really knew she had screwed up royally. “No.”

“Does he feel that he’s found acceptance from the art world?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire looked furious, and Emma felt like an idiot. Maybe her focus had been a little too narrow. To say the least.

“I’m not running this,” Claire said, with a wave of her hand at the computer. “And you’re on unofficial probation.
