Emile Kilo frowned as he watched Selena’s phone signal cut out, disappearing from the map on his laptop. The same image was on the GPS monitor in the SUV full of gunmen he sent to where his girlfriend had called from. She was a wily, crafty woman, and enjoyed his power almost as much as he did. She had come up with the idea for a rabbit hole when the Feds were making their push against the Chief Dozen.

She had also come up with the idea of having the law verify the power of the recently released death squad by directing them to Togor Waste Management. She’d intended to call the cops once they were done taking care of the prosecutor, giving them golden-spun bullshit about how she’d escaped from a horrible fate.

It was blind luck that she’d managed to grab her phone when Le Loupe Grotte was hit in their hotel “home away from home.” Hours after the destruction of Kilo’s forces, she had slipped away and called him, telling him about the people who’d taken her.

There were two. Nappico, that fucking turncoat cop who thought nothing of letting his girlfriend be butchered, and a tall, dark stranger who was armed to the teeth. She’d left her phone on because she hadn’t seen where they were going. That was all right. Kilo had the means of tracking her phone by GPS.

But suddenly she was no longer transmitting. The mystery man who had plucked her from the Miami hotel must have figured out that she was in communication with Kilo. He sighed, realizing that there was going to be little means of removing that back trail.

“Shouldn’t we send someone after that rat’s family?” Tonne asked.

Kilo grimaced. “With what? We’ve got so many people committed to Togor, and we lost a lot when the hotel was hit. We’re going to leave ourselves undefended here, or in Miami? Like it or not, we can only do one thing at a time. The breakout took a lot out of our people.”

“I wish we could trust these fuckers,” Tonne grumbled. He looked toward the door leading off to a row of cells. Kilo and Tonne made certain that the windows had been boarded securely, and with the electricity off to the whole building, there was no lighting for those within. The lack of connection to the power grid didn’t have an effect on Kilo and Tonne and their minions. They had small, portable generators to run lamps, laptops, refrigerators and microwaves for day-to-day work, as well as to recharge their cell phones. Ten members of the Chief Dozen were kept in inky blackness, and any sound made within their cells was punished by a blast of ice-cold water from a high-pressure hose. The ten gangsters were kept under lock and key because there was little telling how much these men would give up for the sake of a lighter sentence. Maybe they were trustworthy, and maybe not.

Either way, Kilo and Tonne were going to keep them locked down.
