James did not bother tapping on the door. He knocked hard, then opened it a fraction and demanded to know if Marco was decent. ‘Decent enough for you,’ was the sarky response from the sick bed.

James insinuated himself into the room and surveyed his friends. His hair glistened in the light of the nearby lamp, and a distinct aroma of musk emanated from his lean body. Once again, he was adorned in his black shirt and suit. He said, ‘I’m heading home and wanted to check you’re all right before I go.’

‘Whose jocks are you wearing?’ Marco enquired suspiciously. ‘They had better not be mine.’

James looked startled. ‘I think they must belong to Ralph. I found them in the laundry room. They’re past their prime so I think I might throw them in the rubbish and buy him some new ones. Does the chap only earn minimum wage or something?’

‘He’s a desperate fucking hoarder when it comes to his underwear,’ Marco declared. ‘He has my heart broken trying to persuade him to buy new stuff. Glenda doesn’t even seem to care! What sort of woman is she, that’s what I want to know? How can she bear to see such faded grey skivvies hanging on her bedpost?’

‘There’s no need to upset yourself,’ James spoke soothingly. ‘Perhaps he’ll gets lots of new undies for Christmas.’

‘He’d better,’ Marco uttered ferociously, ‘because I can’t take any more of those yokes he wears. If only we had a dog, I’d be able to feed them to it. Mutts love chewing on underwear, it’s a veterinary medical fact.’

‘You know the boss won’t get a tail-wagger because she’s convinced it will be killed,’ James said reasonably.

‘Do you think that’s likely?’ Roy looked interested by this. ‘Or do you think she’s being paranoid?’

‘A dog is a soft target,’ James replied coolly. ‘I’d give it six weeks, tops, before it was shot or poisoned. The boss is right to be cautious right now. We don’t want her heartbroken over a dead pooch on top of everything else.’

‘Have you ever shot a dog?’ Marco enquired curiously.

James looked offended. ‘Of course not!’ he barked. ‘I love flea bags.’

‘So how come you don’t you have one?’

‘Because I live in an apartment,’ was the icy rejoinder. ‘When I buy my house, I might get a mutt to go with it, although, with the hours I work, I shall probably have to employ a dog walker. Unless of course I could bring him to work with me...’ He trailed off and appeared to have slipped into a minor fantasy that involved bringing his tail-wagger to work at the palace. The others watched his face soften.

‘Are you buying a house?’ Roy was bored of dog chat and could contain himself no longer.

James stiffened and regretfully emerged from his dream life. ‘I have my eye on a place,’ he said stiffly. ‘Now that Clive is getting hitched, I really need to vacate the apartment. I stumbled across a house that’s due to be auctioned off in two weeks’ time, and asked Saul to come and view it with me.
