Chapter 31
“Did you know that Alex is asleep on our couch downstairs?”
Evelyn’s mother loomed over her. Vivian’s eyes blazed with the midday sun shining from the window.
Evelyn pulled her blankets up. “I know he’s down there. I have no way to know if he’s sleeping or not.”
“Don’t get smart with me. You need to explain this situation.”
“He needed a place to sleep. It was fine last week, why not now?”
For obvious reasons, she and Alex had decided that it was actually a bad idea for him to sleep in her room. So around four in the morning, she’d grabbed an extra pillow and blanket from the linen closet and snuck him downstairs to the living room. Then she went back upstairs to her bed and tried to sleep, but it had taken forever. Every few minutes, she rolled over and smelled his shampoo on her pillow, and her heart had started beating so hard it shook her entire body.
Vivian glanced over at the view of Byrne House. She wrapped her arms over her stomach. “That was before his mother got to town. Mrs. Evans is going to wonder where he is, and I’m not looking forward to telling her that he spent the night at our house. It’s already almost lunchtime.”
“Alex can tell her whatever he wants. He came here last night and said he couldn’t stay at the mansion with his brother there. William treats Alex like he hates him. Alex isn’t going to take it anymore.”
“So we’re in the middle of a fight between Alex and his brother? Fantastic.” Viv sighed and rubbed her eyes. “I’ve completely lost control around here, haven’t I?” she muttered.
“You aren’t going to make Alex leave are you? Please let him stay. He doesn’t have anywhere else to go.”
“He has a place to go. It’s called Byrne House. Where he can live with his creepy family, who I’d managed to avoid all these years until you dragged me into this. I’m not going to kick Alex off the couch while he’s asleep, but beyond that, it’s really out of the question.”
The wood floor creaked downstairs.
“He’s up.” Evelyn jumped out of bed.
Viv blocked the doorway. “You’re not going down like that. You’re in pajamas. Get dressed.”
“Mom, you’re being—”
“Get. Dressed.”
Evelyn took a lightning fast shower and set out some fresh towels for Alex to use. Then she threw on one of her favorite Bohemian skirts and a turtleneck and raced down the stairs. As she’d expected, Viv was holding Alex hostage in the living room, making him answer all kinds of questions about what had happened with William.
Alex stood up when she walked in. He still had on the pajamas that he’d brought with him last night, plaid pants and a sweatshirt with matching plaid trim around the collar and cuffs. Insanely cute. His hair was a mess, like he’d been tossing and turning all night, rubbing his head against the pillow. She wanted to run her fingers through it. But she’d probably end up making it messier.
