It was my friend Coney who encouraged me to ask for lessons again. He loved music. He liked picking out tunes and harmonies at our out-of-tune piano and had somehow taught himself to read music, probably with a clue or two from me. About my age, twelve or so, he needed lessons of his own, from a real teacher, but was shy about getting started and wanted company. We began lessons about the same time from Mrs. L., a neighbor, who wore long, colorful skirts and seemed almost to belong to the same generation as her own daughter. Thought to be separated from her husband, she augmented her doubtful income by offering lessons in dance as well, both ballroom and tap. Her daughter danced with fire and spirit and could play the piano with a certain brave flair, a living advertisement for her mother's skills. Coney lived a couple of blocks farther than I did from our teacher's house and along the way had to pass a small grocery. On lesson afternoons he could be seen hurrying down 19th Avenue, late as usual, a paper sack bulging with soft-drink bottles clutched against his chest. The bottles he would turn in at the grocery for the two-cent deposit on each. The proceeds paid for the week's lesson with Mrs. L.
