The Uber pulls up outside Neely’s house and I climb out, my head spinning with exhaustion and the kiss. It’s nothing more than our lips smushed together, but it sends me into a tailspin. Should I? Could I? I touch my lips with a tired smile.

“You’re going to visit him?” Neely insists as we hug goodnight on the sidewalk.

“Monday. Because it’s already Sunday now.”

She nods firmly as she steps back. “He’s a good one, Shae.”

“I know.”

“Don’t…don’t do what you usually do.” I see the concern in her purple-shadowed eyes. “Give him a chance.”

My smile fades as car headlights illuminate us and I step aside so that my mother can pull into the shared driveway. I haven’t seen her since leaving for the wedding but she’s the last one I want to talk to right now. I wave to Neely and head for the steps, slow on tired feet.

“You’re finally home,” my mother says as she catches me fumbling with the key. “Long wedding.”

“We were having fun.” The door turns and I step inside, welcomed by the thump of Doris’s tail against my leg.

“Who’s we?” Her keys rattle in the bowl on the table and she slips off her coat behind me. I try to hurry out of her way, but my fingers have trouble unbuckling the strap on my shoe.

“Neely, Dawson,” I say shortly. “Adam. Some friends we made at the wedding.”

I have one shoe off as Mom looms above me. “Who is he?”

“He who?” Slumped against the wall, I stare innocently up at her. I am not telling her about Emmett.

“It must be a guy. You always seem to find one.” With a click of her tongue, she drops a hand on Doris’s yellow head and turns away.

“Is that a problem for you?” It’s like my mother knows exactly what button to press, and when to press it for maximum impact. Am I such an open book that she can tell that I met Emmett, and not only that, but I’m confused beyond belief? This is when I need a mother to confide in, not a cold shell still floundering in the muck of her own pain.

“As long as you don’t make it a problem for them,” she says crisply. “Your future is uncertain, to say the least, and the last thing you should be doing is setting some poor guy up for heartbreak.”

“I just met him,” I mutter, pulling off my second shoe and setting them neatly by the wall.

“You of all people should understand what it’s like to lose someone.”

“Yeah, I think I’m an expert on that,” I say, heavy on the sarcasm. The memory of my father’s funeral is as vivid as if it happened last night. My mother’s blank face and how she looked right through me is something I doubt I’ll ever forget.

But she always seems to forget that she wasn’t the only one that he left behind.

“Do you think it’s fair to him?”

“What’s fair? And to who?” My stomach sinks because I know where she’s going with this.
