Iâd given Mae the benefit of the doubt, because the truth was that she seemed to step up and prove herself every time we got into a tight spot. But every warning imaginable was going off in my head. This was not what we did. We didnât go around trying to piss off powerful people or take revenge. We kept our heads down, unless absolutely necessary, and tried to help anyone who needed us.
It kind of riled me back up that we were here and that Grim and Alastair were just going along with this. Hadnât Mae said this could kill us? Hell, I didnât mind risking my life, but why were we doing this? Because of a list?
Mae glanced back at me and power seemed to crackle over her skin. âJust follow right behind us. Got it?â
I almost said no. I almost told them all this was stupid, but Grim answered before I did. âWeâre ready.â
I shot the reaper a concerned look. Why the hell is he just going along with this?
But then everyone started forward, and I clenched my fists together and followed. I wasnât like Alastair and Mae. I wasnât a witch or a warlock. The way my magic worked was different. But still, I could feel power humming around us as we moved, like live wires leaping around us.
âThis isnât a good idea,â I whispered to Grim as we walked almost shoulder-to-shoulder.
âMaybe. Maybe not.â
I shot him a dirty look. âI thought we werenât in the business of taking unnecessary risks.â
âI evaluated it. Her going alone was a greater risk.â
He had a point, but then, people did stupid stuff every day. It didnât mean our entire team had to go along with them. So why wasnât I turning around and walking away? All logic said that was what I should do. But when I looked at Mae, it felt like there was no other choice.
Which bothered me even more.
We reached the front door of the Wardwell house. And to my surprise, Mae reached out and simply opened the door. For a second my mouth hung open before I slammed it shut. With wards that were this powerful, it was no surprise they didnât bother locking the door. Any unwelcome visitor would be dead long before they reached this point.
We all stepped into a massive foyer with a spiral staircase heading up to the second floor. Mae hesitated for a moment, then continued through the house. To my surprise, we didnât run into any of the staff as she worked her way down the hallway to one side, opening one door after another. But when she tossed open the last door, she stiffened, and I moved to stand behind her, looking over her head.
It was a sunroom of some kind, with a full wall of glass facing the backyard and white couches arranged to take in the view of the trees and the grass. And donât forget the huge swimming pool. A woman sat in one of the chairs, a cup of tea in her hands.
