CHAPTER 12
Emma’s excitement about John’s progress lasted only long enough for her to reach the second stair, on her way down to tell Michelle that it was working. Then, the fear that burned through her almost made her fall, and her hand shot out to grip the railing as she fought against the nausea rising in the back of her throat.
She recognized that fear. Not because it was her own. It wasn’t. She knew it because she’d experienced it before, in a time she’d hoped to forget, in a city she never planned on visiting again.
It came from Jesse. This was his, garroting her into near helplessness. Though he rarely let her into such tumultuous emotions after the incidents in New York with Marcus Brooker, she still recognized this particular flavor of fear.
He only felt this crippling terror when it came to someone he loved. Those numbered two in the world—her and Gideon.
Gideon wasn’t in danger from anyone right now. He was the threat.
Her head whipped around, staring at the door they’d barricaded. That meant she was the one Jesse was worried about. From Gideon? But Gideon wouldn’t hurt her.
Gideon wasn’t himself. Jesse had said so. He’d seen it with his own eyes.
Emma flew down the rest of the stairs, racing for Michelle. “We need to get out of here,” she panted as she grabbed Michelle’s arm.
Michelle gently pulled away from her. “Does John have the barricade completely down?”
“No. I don’t know. He’s gotten farther. But we have to move to another room.” Another wave from Jesse hit her, and she squeezed her eyes shut. “Now.”
“Right. Is there a room that’s more secure? We can’t move too far. We’ll risk losing people.”
“We need something more defensible, with just one door.” Emma wracked her brain, trying to push past Jesse’s barreling emotions to consider the possibilities. Trying to grasp them was like trying to fish with her bare hands—they kept slipping out of her grip just when she thought she had a hold. “There’s a living room on the other side of the foyer. There’s only one way in and out, and the windows open out onto the front yard. We could go there.”
“Okay. Good. We’ll get the door unblocked, then you and Derek should lead the way to the living room. He won’t let anything happen to you. John and I will bring up the rear. Gideon can’t hurt either one of us; we’ll make sure he doesn’t flank us.” Michelle sounded calm, but she slammed her fist against her open palm. “Goddamn him. I shouldn’t have let Jesse go out there.”
“Gideon won’t hurt him. He’d never hurt him.”
“He’s already hurt him,” Michelle snapped. “I should go after them once we get everybody settled. Jesse…he has no idea what he’s facing.”
They didn’t have time to be arguing about this—the fear was still there like ash in the back of her throat—but Emma hated when Michelle got like this. “Nobody knows Gideon like Jesse does. He’ll stop him. Not you. You’re not thinking straight right now.
