Chapter Four
We got back to the house just in time for a late lunch with the parents. Debbie had a huge spread set up on the back patio overlooking the pool, so we joined her and Dad and a few family friends.
“Katie, boys, where have you been?” Debbie asked, “You didn’t make her go for a long hike this morning, did you? She looks flushed.” She glared at her sons.
“No,” I replied, blushing deeply, “It wasn’t that long.”
“We took her for a walk in Mission Park,” David said, “she said she missed the ocean.”
“You should have taken her straight to the beach, boys…not down that cliff. That’s so dangerous and difficult. I’m sorry Katie, sometimes my boys don’t think. I hope they didn’t push you too hard.”
“It’s okay,” I said and looked down at my lemonade. I sipped it and willed the conversation to steer in a different direction. The boys were shooting me smug little looks and I almost started giggling at our secret.
“At least they’re all getting along for once,” my father said, “that’s nice to see.”
“Yes, now that we’ve grown up we’ve found we all have so much in common,” David said, smiling in my direction. I kicked him under the table and he laughed.
“I don’t know what’s so funny, but you have to try this cold smoked salmon,” Debbie said and slid a plate in my direction.
I ate just to avoid speaking too much; I didn’t know what to say to some of Debbie’s questions. They felt booby-trapped to me, as if everything I said was a sexual innuendo. I know she and my father didn’t pick up on anything, but having Derrick and David there made everything feel sexual.
Finally the topic came around to Tom. My father had been pretty laid back until then, making small talk about some company takeover with his friends. When Debbie asked me about Tom, as in where did I meet him, where did he go, I didn’t even have time to reply.
“I didn’t like that man from the moment you brought him in,” my father jumped in, “he was eyeballing the place like everything had a price tag and he’d hit pay dirt. I don’t care where you met him, I don’t want you seeing him again.”
“Oh I don’t think she’ll be seeing him again,” David said. His face was immediately serious and his voice was low, with a warning.
“Why’s that?” my father asked. I’d already told him Tom had been run off, but I guess he didn’t know the whole story.
“We caught him about to hit her,” Derrick said, his voice matching David’s. I hadn’t realized how angry the two of them had been about it, and how mad they still were.
“Hit her?” my father raged, “And you threw him out on his ass?”
“We did,” David said.
“It wasn’t that bad,” I added, suddenly feeling a little vulnerable. I hated the fact that my personal life was being laid out in front of my family and their friends. I’d
