Chapter 3: Personal Development is Key
Most of the things contained in your pack are consumable. The other things inside it will be subjected to wear and there. Some will even be bartered with. When that is done, then that is it. But the strength of your arms and the skills that you possess, well that will last a lot longer.
Let us say the US dollar collapses, what happens then? If the previous Great Depression is of any indication, it will mean: no jobs; cash is useless; no basic utilities; no creature comforts. In other words, there is no way to wheel and deal your way out of a problem. If you want to survive, you need to go back to the basics.
Food Via Land, Sea, and Air
Farming, fishing, and hunting skills are necessary for you to eat well, and to allow you to have enough surplus to barter for other things that you need. We are not talking about farming with all those nifty tools and gadgets, and store bought seedlings, fertilizers, saplings, etc. We are talking about farming, fishing, and hunting, survival style.
Survival Gardening
First and foremost, you will need to know what are edible and not edible. Don’t just learn from the book. Learn from a local expert. Explore your neighborhood and the surrounding woods, desserts, forests, etc. Mark places where edible fruits, crops, herbs can be found.
Second, you will need to understand how to plant, cultivate and rear. You should learn to plant crops without buying anything. Learn how to use compost and to utilize the natural topography to your advantage.
Third, and possibly the most important, you should know how to do so on the down-low. Camouflage is the key. This is because, during the worst of times, the last thing you want is to exert all your efforts into planting, fishing and rearing, and then have some gang of marauders steal your prize away from you.
When it comes to fishing and hunting, this is not much of a problem. You rely on what you can catch, without needing to cultivate. But when it comes to farming and rearing, then you need to know how to do it in a smaller scale, on different locations, and in such a way that nobody notices the foodstuff that you are growing; or notices the animals that you have been rearing.
Bush Craft vs. Hiking for Yuppies
Bush craft is the art of surviving in the wild, with only a few basic gear i.e. machete, water canteen, and a sturdy pair of boots . This is old school survival at its finest. It is an essential skill for you to thrive and achieve a minimum level of comfort, when the shit hits the fan.
Hiking for yuppies, are hikers who will not survive in the wild without their expensive tents, high end hiking backpacks, hydration bladders, titanium trekking poles, butane and gas powered stove. Heck, some of these sissies can’t even fathom sleeping on the ground without their pillows and inflatable sleeping mats. True enough, you can carry these things for a week at most.
