As I mentioned before, the house where Bill and I lived was next to a set of train tracks. It was the Missouri-Pacific freight line. Bill was the one who introduced me to the pleasures of hanging out by the railroad. He liked to walk along the tracks and sit out there for hours on end. The rails stretched on for miles and miles in either direction and the unobscured views were very soothing. The terrain around a set of high-voltage power lines can provide a similar feeling.

Every time a freight train passed by our house, the whole place would shake and rumble and the windows would rattle about in their frames. This was annoying to Bill, or at least I think it was. The walls of our apartments weren’t very thick and I often overheard his personal commentary, things he thought he was saying just to himself. Right after a train went by he would shout out, “Fucking freight trains!” or “Goddamn trains!”

But if I ever asked him about this he would deny it. “Oh, I love trains,” he would say to me.
