Having helped to defeat an invasion by the Sontarans, Martha then took one more trip in the TARDIS, to the planet Messaline. But she stood by her decision not to travel with the Doctor, and was keen to return home to her life and job and fiancé.

A year later, when the Earth was transported to the Medusa Cascade and invaded by Daleks, Martha accepted her terrifying responsibility as a UNIT officer and attempted to activate the Osterhagen Project to destroy the Earth, rather than let it be used by the Daleks to create a Reality Bomb. Although the Daleks stopped her using the key, Martha teamed up with the Doctor and several of his companions to defeat the Daleks. She and the gang then all piloted the TARDIS so that it could bring Earth back to its proper place in the universe.

Martha eventually married Mickey Smith, a young man and former boyfriend of Rose Tyler who had also travelled with the Doctor. Happy, fulfilled and appreciated, Martha continued to defend the Earth.
