IT HAPPENED that Habeas Corpus caught his dog-like legs in a tangle of insulated wiring while cross the Laboratory. He emitted a surprised squeal.

Doc Savage's response was violent. He whirled, his eyes hard with concern!

"Habeas!" he barked.

The shoat froze. It was accustomed to obeying the Bronze Man's voice.

Monk leaped from his stool.

"Doc!" he squeaked. "What is it? What's wrong?"

"Monk," Doc said with forceful intentions. "Call Habeas back to you."

"Why?"

"Just do it."

Doc Savage's brittle tone was all the motivation that the apish chemist required.

"Here, Habeas," he called. "Here, boy. Have a walnut."

Habeas Corpus looked over his shoulder … hesitated. Monk extracted a walnut from a coat pocket and popped it in two with a great squeeze of his fingers.

The pig then came running. It leaped into the furry beams that were Monk's arms whereupon it began munching on chewy walnut pieces.

"I don't get it," Monk said.

"This apparatus," Doc said, returning to his equipment, "is highly dangerous to be around. Hence the protective clothing I am wearing."

"Oh yeah?" It have anything to do with the Blind Death?"

Instead of answering, Doc asked a question.

"Has Ham returned from his investigations as yet?"

"Any minute now," Monk predicted. "But five bucks says that ambulance chaser comes back with egg on his pretty kisser."
