CHAPTER 15

It was time to change tack. Knox and I were only going to get so far with this investigation, especially as all we could do when we saw each other was kiss. And since it took me about an hour to come down to earth after each kiss, even if our lips only touched for a split second - damn the man - that was a whole other tranche of time I wasn't totally with it.

Sometimes the smart thing to do is to ask for help. I didn't believe every police officer in the whole constabulary of Orament was an idiot. There must be at least one who could get their head around the unseen and the ineffable.

Paul's police contact was Officer Willard. He might be a good place to start, although I didn't want to go through Paul, which meant I'd have to nick Willard's contact details from Paul's address book. This I did while Paul was at lunch. A little later, I slipped onto the street to make a private call to the police.

When he picked up, Willard sounded suspicious. I supposed he didn't recognise the number.

"Hi, Willard," I said as breezily as possible. "This is Calypso Cook, Paul Owen's colleague on the Tribune."

"I only talk to Paul."

"I don't need you to give me any information. In fact, I have information to give you. Which Orament Police might want to act upon."

"Why are you calling me? There's a duty number for ongoing investigations."

"There's a relationship of mutual trust and respect between Paul and you. I need to speak to someone I know is solid and used to talking to journalists."

"But Paul doesn't know you're calling me?"

"Er… no. He's touchy about sharing his contacts."

Willard thought about this for a moment. "Well, go on then," he said eventually.

"Bear with me. You remember the husky theft six months ago?"

"Yes. All the litter were rescued except for one. By you."

"That's right. Police were happy to close the case, but you never looked into how the one puppy died."

"Ritual sacrifice."

"Its heart was removed. Surgically. A long vertical incision on its chest. Ring any bells?"

"If you're suggesting this has anything to do with the dead wizard… I'm not sure that's going to fly."

"Why not? Why not look into the suspects involved in the husky case and see if they're involved here?"

"Because we've got three murdered kids in a week. It’s a crazy high number for this city - but don’t quote me on that. It's too early to jump to conclusions about any of them."

"Well, bear it in mind."

"What are you saying? It's an organ theft ring or something? Who'd want magic organs?"

That was disappointing. What was wrong with magic organs? Was Willard a bigot?

"Okay," I said. "Just think about it."

Sometimes that's all you can do with people. Drop the idea into their mind and leave it there. Don't press too hard, otherwise they'll spit it out. After a while, they'll stumble across it and think they had it themselves.

"It's nice talking to you, Willard.
