The Sufis spoke of the same thing. I asked the sheikh about their holy books. Do you have a book like the Torah, the Bible, or the Koran, that is, do you have a sacred book? There’s the Mushafi Resh, he said. That is, the Black Book. We also have the Mushafi Jelve, a book of revelations, but these aren’t the real book, they explain certain customs. Our true holy book is missing. It’s memorized and passed down from father to son and from mother to daughter. That’s why they call us the children of kalam, that is, children of the word.

He smiled. “That is, we’re the people of the word.” Then he added, “My son the newspaperman, write all of this so that people can learn the truth. We have no connection with Caliph Yezid, who killed Mohammed’s grandson Hussein bin Ali. Our god is Ezd.”

I promised him I would write everything. But at the same time I had doubts that my editor (who had no interest in this mystical world—his attention was focused on politicians in Ankara and celebrities posing half-naked in Bodrum) would find this subject interesting enough to print. Of course I didn’t tell him this. If all else fails, I’ll publish it on the internet, I told him, I’ll have more freedom.

Perhaps it was impolite, since it might seem as if I wanted something in return for this promise, but I asked him a favor. I said I was looking for a girl named Meleknaz who had come from Syria, a girl from Lalish who had a blind baby. Of course I wasn’t expecting him to know her among ten thousand people, but maybe he could help. He thought for a moment, then turned to a young Ezidi man in the tent and said something in Kurdish. The young man bowed slightly with respect, put his right hand over his heart, and said ser serê min şeyh. Then the sheikh turned to me. He said that this young man was his son, Shems: “He’s going to help you find that girl.”
