Crazy Color Faces

Young artists explore the impact of color as they paint Crazy Color Faces inspired by the style of Matisse.

Materials

crayons

large sheets of white drawing paper

colored chalks

watercolors, tempera, or acrylic paints

paintbrushes

Process

Using a dark crayon, draw a big, oval shape filling the middle of the paper.

All a face really needs to look like a face is two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Think of an unusual way to make these features in the oval, such as flower shapes, squares, or triangles. Use chalks and crayons to scribble and color. Use bright colors of paint to outline and fill. The design does not need to look like a real person’s face.

Create hair for the oval face, but use a different color than typical hair. Think of how Matisse used “unreal” colors in his paintings, such as blue faces and green hair. Add a hat, flowers, necklace, glasses, or any other accessories.

Finally, paint or color the background around the face. Fill the paper with bright colors and stripes or zigzags. For example, Matisse often filled his paintings with leaf and fern shapes, decorated clothes, and wallpaper designs with with flowers, zigzags, stripes, or clouds of color.
