The week seemed to pass with glacial slowness. There were no further opportunities until Friday to taste Lizzyâs charms again. With Miss Caroline stopping to spend the night on her travels to Netherfield, Wednesday had been interminable and spent fielding her attempts to entice me into proposing marriage.
She was a fine match. Everything about her suited a man of my station. She had good breeding, exquisite manners, and a more-than-adequate dowry, though I did not require a wealthy wife. Yet she left me cold. I could not envision her agreeing to share herself with Richard, and that would be a necessary requirement if I ever chose to take a bride.
I should select a chit fresh from the schoolroom, who could be properly trained to know her role and please me and my cousin. The idea held little appeal as well. Perhaps I was just a committed bachelor. It was a universally accepted truth that a rich man was in want of a wife, but many a men of the Ton did not accept that so-called truth. I must fall into that category. A wife was an inconvenience, unless one lucked out and found such a gem as Althea.
Lizzy was waiting for us in the childrenâs sitting room when we came out from bidding them goodnight Friday evening. She had seemed a little reluctant to be around us, and I was anticipating we would have to allay some of her fears. Sheâd had a whole week to process what had happened, and sheâd either worked herself into a state, or perhaps she had accepted what was happening. That seemed unlikely, since she seemed to be keeping a distance between herself and us.
âIâve been looking forward to this all week,â said Richard. âDid you receive my gift and instructions, dove?â
I knew to which gift he referred. He had sent her a selection of plugs of increasing size, along with a bottle of oil. He wanted her to be ready to take him up the arse this weekend, so I knew he would be highly disappointed if she hadnât done as heâd instructed. He would probably paddle her arseâthough he preferred his flogger.
She didnât seem inclined to answer his question. The way she was hugging herself radiated âkeep awayâ when all I wanted to do was get closer. I sighed.
âYou are getting worked up over nothing,â said Richard. He must have read her signals too.
She blinked and looked at him. âWhat are you talking about?â
âIt is obvious you worked yourself into a state over what happened last weekend. Let me guess? You decided you were a common whore, and we should not do naughty things. That is the reason nobody talks about those kinds of things or admits to doing them, right?â I was bored as I listed several of the reasons Iâd heard over the years for why it was wrong to have a triad, or to be in a polyamorous relationship, or to have multiple husbands or wives. I was blasé, but she was going through the anxiety of it all for the first time.
