TWENTY-TWO

On the Wednesday afternoon of Lisa-Marie’s third week at the A-Frame, Justin cut short their time on the raft and delivered a message from Izzy – Lisa-Marie was to come back to the garden after she went home and changed.

She looked suspiciously at Justin’s grinning face, “Changed for what?”

“Izzy says to say, a fancy dinner, nothing else.”

Lisa-Marie arrived back in the garden about an hour later clad in what she hoped would be suitable – a short, black, spandex skirt and the white, peasant blouse she had bought on her first trip to Dearborn with Liam. She wore a black bra under the flouncy fabric for effect. She barely applied any make-up at all – a bit of lip gloss and a light dusting of mascara had to do. Her time-consuming makeup rituals were now a thing of the past. She certainly didn’t want mascara running all over her face when she climbed up on the raft with Justin after a swim in the lake.

Lisa-Marie saw Liam setting up a portable table in the garden house, exactly the right size for the four chairs he placed around it. Justin was waiting for Liam to get the table set up so he could cover it with a white linen tablecloth. Izzy was coming out of the cabin with a large basket.

“Oh, Lisa, you look pretty and your timing is perfect. We’re almost ready. The first salsa cruda feast of the season is being served tonight and we are going to enjoy it.”

She beckoned Lisa-Marie over and together they set the richly draped table with pasta bowls and heavy, silver cutlery. Wine goblets, their deep-blue, glazed finish matching the bowls, came next. Izzy set a center-piece on the table – red roses in a black bowl with tiny, white floating-candles, winking and sparkling between the flowers.

Izzy and Liam returned to the main cabin and emerged moments later carrying wine, a huge covered bowl of pasta, a basket of fresh bread, and the salsa cruda – a cold pasta topping made from the first, ripe tomatoes of the season mixed with garlic, red onion, black olives, fresh basil, balsamic vinegar and a light, olive oil. Lots of cracked pepper was thrown in for good measure and a block of pungent parmesan cheese lay nearby, to be grated on top.

Izzy waved them all forward, “Everyone sit … let’s get started.” She smiled at Justin before adding, “We’ve been looking forward to this all day.”

Lisa-Marie stiffened at the sound of the word we that so clearly referred to Izzy and Justin. She was wildly glad she and Liam had been invited to share the meal. The thought of Justin looking forward all day to anything alone in the garden house with Izzy, made Lisa-Marie feel sick.

Liam sat down and clutched at his stomach, “I’m going to pay for this. But it’ll be worth it.”

The wine Izzy chose to go with the dinner was a Zinfandel, glittering pink as it was poured from the bottle. All the windows in the garden house were open wide.
