Being Different

Many experiences heightened my awareness that, despite efforts to get on with life in the same way as anyone else, I was regarded as different. I think, for example, of a Saturday afternoon when I and a group of teenage friends with disabilities from my special school were completing our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition. When we returned, we discovered that the Head Teacher had received two phone calls from people in the nearby village, asking whether four of his pupils had ‘escaped.’ Or of an incident in my early twenties, while I was doing a short course at St. John’s Theological College in Nottingham: A fellow student who happened to be with me in the common room one day was clearly embarrassed at the idea of leaving me on my own. She asked who was responsible for looking after me. I had to reply ‘nobody’!

To think of people like me serving in mission in rural Africa required a large shift of mind-set. I thank God for enabling this to happen, which is clearer to see now with hindsight.
