In the surveys conducted by American states before the pandemic, the most common services respondents wanted to be provided online were: 1) renewing a driver's license; 2) voter registration; 3) state park information and reservations; 4) voting 5) access to one-stop shopping (one portal for all government services); 6) ordering birth, death, and marriage certificates; 7) filing state taxes; 8) obtaining hunting and fishing licenses; and 9) accessing medical information. Some local governments now permit licensing and permit renewal online.8 Applying for government benefits and learning more about the availability of programs has doubtless moved higher on the list of searches as a result of the pandemic. The list of government services available online is expanding due to the conversion to work-at-home. (For a larger list of services provided online by other nations, see Figure 10.3, p. 287.)
As of January 2020, 40 states and the District of Columbia allow voter registration on the internet. Another common theme being explored by governments is the notion of one-stop shopping or âAmazonâ model for services, giving citizens the ability to access specific government information, such as employment, healthcare, or medical data. The spread of the coronavirus has forced millions of previously disconnected citizens to depend on government websites and social networks to obtain education, financial support, healthcare, human services support, and communicate with family members. In some cases, however, the learning curve has been steep, as many elderly citizens inexperienced with use of internet technology found when trying to connect and schedule appointments for COVID-19 vaccine.
