I returned to find Expressionism.

Blinded by long absence I try at first to find my bearings using the word itself. Expre. -- that would be the opposite to Imp.? But what is meant by Imp.? The sketches of Altenberg? One might call these "impressions," but one might just as well call them "little reflections" and, the older he gets, the more the receptive element retreats behind the reflective one.

Herm[ann] Bahr? He once wrote something that he called "Impressionism." But these were live interviews and, after all, one doesn't found a literary movement on the basis of opposition to journalism. The early Schnitzler? He was a moralist -- it does not matter how deep he may have been. Ibsen was a moralist and critic. Hauptmann, an optician for German bourgeois movements with a German Spring as backdrop. Thomas Mann? He described himself as a pupil of C.E Meyer and Storm so he wasn't an Impressionist either. Nowhere in the higher regions of creative writing was there an Impressionist. There were some who were of Impressionist hue but these were fellow travelers.

I interrupt this to record that I have not the slightest feelings of belonging to these {older} generations of authors, indeed that I oppose them even though I appreciate one or other aspect of their work.

Later: formation of a group like Naturalism. Ambitious people provided with the trademark.

Note: some also call it expressive art. But what kind of art would not be expression? "A piece of nature seen through a temperament." A piece of temperament looking out at nature -- this is a simple shift of the balance weight. But probably one that hits the mark. But probably this matches the concept of Romanticism that already exists. (A very subjective art.)

Each artist should have the feeling that everything that went before him was filth; if a movement shouts this from the rooftops that means: banding together, cowardice, sense of inadequacy.
