One senior Buckingham Palace official told the story of a marriage on the verge of collapse as the mid-1980s approached, even though it officially lasted several more years. “(Charles) didn’t change his bachelor ways,” the official said. “She wanted him to stay at home with her and the children.
She challenged him—it was the first time he had been challenged. It was the first time he had met his equal—he was surrounded by yes-men.”2
Though Diana’s assertion that Charles was disappointed that she had given birth to another boy has been denied, her love and attention for both William and Harry cannot be. Even those critical of Diana for her behavior during the marriage have marveled at the joy she brought to mothering. The postpartum depression she experienced after William arrived 65

did not return following the birth of Harry. Her life revolved around the boys. She organized parties for them and stuck notes on doors expressing her love for them. She also proved to be a conscientious mother, making them pick up their toys and regulating their intake of sweets. Diana became even closer to William and Harry after her divorce, mostly because her emotional needs had grown, but the love she felt for them was deep from the moment they were born.
Though both Diana and Charles displayed a tremendous affection for their children, they continued to drift apart. It became apparent by the mid-1980s that they were mismatched from the start. Diana had become the fashion darling of Great Britain. Every new dress, every new hairdo, every new piece of jewelry worn by the princess became fodder for the media. Charles and the rest of the royal family were pushed to the inside pages of the newspapers as photos of the glamorous Diana consumed the front. When she wore her hair up for the first time at the 1984 State Opening of Parliament, which is intended to place the spotlight on the queen, Diana’s new hairstyle bumped Elizabeth II from the front page. new publications that were to be devoted entirely to the royal family focused almost exclusively on Diana and her children.
Diana became increasingly aware of the attention paid to her wardrobe and began traveling with hundreds of different outfits.
While Charles proved far more reflective and introspective, particularly at that point in their lives, Diana was now in her mid-20s and was more in tune with the entertainment world. In July 1985, they attended the famed live Aid rock concert at Wembley Stadium in london to raise money for starving people in Ethiopia. While Diana could be seen dancing to the music of such legends as Madonna, David Bowie, and former Beatle Paul McCartney, Charles looked downright bored and out of place in his suit and tie.

Diana, now convinced that her husband had resumed his relationship with Camilla, began showing her flirtatious side as well. reporter Judy Wade spoke about one occasion in which Diana openly flirted with Andrew Morton, a member of the press corps who later wrote a controversial biography of the princess.
