The air in Gavin’s old-country kitchen felt thin and tight with all her favorite people inside it. Jane took a deep breath and readied herself for what she knew would be a lot of family criticism. But no matter what they said, she had to stop the dreamwalker, and she knew in her bones there was only one way to do that.

She swallowed. The news about Slade had hit her hard and she felt as if her insides morphed into jelly, but that didn’t matter. She had to confront Metus.

Cassie and Merlina folded their arms. The warlocks shook their heads in unison.

Gavin said, “The hell you are.”

“I am going on a Vision Quest, and it can only be me.”

“Give your head a shake,” said Merlina in her shrillest voice. “I told you before and I’ll tell you again, it’s a bad idea.”

“I’ve been preparing for this. I have a shaman guide, and I am ready.” Jane crossed her fingers.

Gavin put his fists on his hips. “No. Way.”

“Do you know what’s involved in taking a Vision Quest?” asked Donovan who still had that constipated look on his face.

“Yes. And I’m ready.” Or … so she hoped, but Jane didn’t say that. She’d cleared the air between her and her sisters, her mother, her father, and Gavin—and Leos, too.

Cassie spoke up. “The power of three is stronger. You know that. Why can’t we go with you?”

Before Jane could answer, Sanjay said, “It is a lone journey of the soul. I have heard stories.”

“With happy endings?” asked Cassie.

“Mostly. But …” His marmalade eyes shone with magic, but his face looked solemn. “Vision Quests take you to another dimension, a point beyond space and time where none of our laws have any affect. Your magic will not work there. It is a spiritual landscape totally foreign to you. No one should take this journey lightly.”

“I have thought long and hard about this decision. I have to go.”

Gavin’s face reddened. “Why?”

“Metus will stalk other people’s dreams. Slade was just the first victim in our town. I have met Metus, and I know he intends to feed his ravenous appetite on the rest of us.”

“Tell us more,” said Sanjay.

“I used my skills to enter one of Slade’s dreams. Metus is insanely dangerous. I promised Slade that I’d stop him.”

“Slade is dead. Your assignment is over,” said Gavin.

“It’s about the rest of the town, and …”

“It’s about Eirilick,” said Cassie softly.

Her words hit Jane like a roller-coaster from hell, rolling over her safety guards and hitting her heart at high speed. Cassie was right. It wasn’t just about Slade and the town. Maybe it had been in the beginning, but it wasn’t now. This was personal. This was about her, her abduction, her nightmares … her trauma. Was there any point in denying it?

“You need more counseling,” said Merlina.

“I need to experience the dream dimension,” said Jane. “And none of you are stopping me.”

“How do you get to another dimension?” asked Gabe. “Does it take a portal? I’m good at creating them.
