Ray, surprised by Paulaâs outburst because it is so out of her character, is confused for a moment. Recovering, he says, âOkay, Paula, no name calling. Just tell him how he makes you feel.â
âHeâs so vicious. As if affection is a sin.â
Maggie says, âIf he canât fuck it, he tries to kill it.â
âWe havenât done anything like that,â Paula says.
âYouâre losing it, Paula,â says Ray. âHeâs winning.â
âHe makes me ashamed. He just makes me want to crawl off and die.â
âLike your father, Paula?â
âMy father wasnât like him.â She sobs. âMy father was gentle...â
âYour father was evil.â
âYouâre wrong! You donât understand!â
âEvil, Paula. The father of lies.â
âNo...â
âWorse than Duke, Paula. Worse than Duke by far.â
âThen Iâm evil too.â
âThatâs exactly what he wants you to believe. Itâs time to deal with him. Heâs dead, but his hands are still on you.â
âYou canât tell them.â
âNo more secrets, Paula. Thereâs no more time for secrets. The secrets are killing you even more than the pills are killing you. Iâll help you. The group will help you. This may be your last chance, Paula.â
Maggie begs, âDo it, Paula, please.â
Angel says, âWe love you, Paula.â
âI canât!â Paula cries out.
Ray stands up and signals to Maggie to switch chairs with him so that he is sitting next to Paula.
âAlex, get the batacca please.â
Alex rises from his chair, goes to the wall where the batacca rests, picks up the bat, slides the cushion over in front of Paula, then stands holding the bat out to her.
She hesitates.
âYou have to talk to him,â says Ray, not commanding now, imploring. âYou have to tell him what he did to you. The shame. The shame you turn on yourself. Give it back to him. Itâs not yours. Itâs his.â
She takes the batacca from Alex.
Ray points to Duke. âThere he is. Talk to him.â
âNot him.â
âYes, him. Itâs him. Think of Duke as your father. Tell him what itâs really like for you, Paula. Duke, move up here closer.â
âFuck this,â says Duke, âIâm not gonna do it.â
âDo it! Move up here now! For once youâre gonna help someone.â
Angel and Alex visibly squirm, an involuntary almost unconscious response to the vehemence of Rayâs rage at Duke. They sense Ray is nearly unhinged, has arrived at some breaking point.
âDonât make him do that, Ray,â Angel says, âitâs not right.â
âShut up, Angel,â Ray says, nearly shouting. âYouâre not helping. Duke, are you going to do what I say or not?â
Duke moves his chair slightly forward, only minimally complying.
âTalk to him, Paula,â Ray commands.
She takes in a deep breath, and her voice quivers with emotion. âDaddy...She stops. âRay, I canât do this! I canât look at him,â pointing to Duke.
Thwarted, Ray gives up on this angle. âOkay, Paula. Move back, Duke.â
âThank God!â says Angel.
Duke gets up, leaving the empty chair in front of Paula, and returns to his seat. But he is still not far away from Paula and is directly in her line of sight.
âOkay, Paula,â says Ray, gentle again. âNo more excuses, no more evasions. Itâs time.
