CHAPTER
EIGHT
Ivy stared out into the darkness, searching for any signs of the undead. So far, it had been a quiet night, which was nothing unusual. She heard the sounds of the ladder creaking as someone ascended it, turning to see Dean as he stepped over the edge.
âSorry, Iâm late.â He said as he walked over to where she was standing. âHad something to take care of.â He added as he crossed his arms over his chest.
âItâs okay. Been quiet out there.â Ivy glanced at him. All day Ivy had been thinking of that night. If she should talk with Dean, fill him in on what she learned from Tommy, even her visit from Robert. She hadnât said anything to anyone, especially Max, but Dean had always been one of her strongest allies.
Both Ivy and Dean fell silent as they watched the outer of their borders.
Ivy continued to glance at Dean when he finally turned to her with his brows arched. âYou have something you want to say, or are you hitting on me?â he asked, a hint of a smile pulled at his lips.
Ivy looked at him, then took a deep breath. âSarah wasnât killed by an undead.â She blurted out.
Dean straightens at her words. âWhat are you talking about? She was torn apart. What else would do that?â He dropped his arms to his sides and turned toward her.
âIt was made to look like she was, but she wasnât.â
âYou don't know that,â Dean snapped back.
âThink about it. There were no undead found in the compound.â Ivy quickly replied.
âSomeone must have taken care of it.â Dean fired back. She knew he would rebuttal a little. Any rational person would as they trusted their leader, and the idea of such a killer being in the compound was pure terror.
âThere was no hint of one of them other than Sarah being killed. Just Sarah. When have you ever heard of them killing once and then moving on? Plus, she never turned. I mean, if she was bitten and left whole like that, she would have turned. Itâs not like she was burned right after,â Ivy continued. Dean fell silent. Did she have him? Did he believe her?
âI meanâ¦â he started to speak, but stopped with a glance down.
âI think Robert has something to do with all of this.â She blurted out.
Dean raised his eyes to hers.
âHow did I know you were going to say that?â He said with a shake of his head as he turned from her.
âHeâs not right, and heâs doing all he can to keep this hidden.â She continued with a sigh. âHe cornered me in the shower.â She added.
Deanâs head snapped in her direction. âHe did what?â His voice was laced with anger.
âYou heard me.â She simply stated. âTold me to keep everything I learned about Sarah to myself, that Tommy was wrong, and if I didnât, then I would regret it,â Ivy explained.
âWaitâ¦Tommy? What does he have to do with this? What did he tell you?â Deanâs face filled with confusion.
