JUST FIVE MINUTES LATER, Gabriel and Natasha left what he’d deemed the nerd-cave behind them, and strolled out into the sun. Jason was right, it was some kind of English miracle. And the people of London were taking full advantage. They’d left the safety of their homes and cafés, and poured outside in the droves—filling the massive shopping pavilion in a cheerful swarm.

They linked arms and took their time, wandering past crowds of squealing children and over-fed pigeons. It was one of the best times to be in the city. One of those rare winter days when the streets were still walkable, and the breeze smelled like cinnamon and cloves.

“This reminds me of New York,” Natasha murmured, resting her head on his shoulder. “I mean...minus the trash, and the smell, and the coked-up stockbrokers at every turn.”

“And the rats,” Gabriel added thoughtfully.

Never had he seen so many rats. And he’d spent the first eighteen years of life underground.

“The rats are better than the tourists. At least the rats have subway etiquette.” She pried open the gift bag, looking gleefully inside. “I can’t believe it’s mine! Luke’s going to lose his shit!”

The assassin laughed aloud, circling an arm around her waist.

“You’re unbelievable,” he said with a grin, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “That’s the same expression Jason used to get whenever I bought him candy.”

“And look how much he loves you now,” she replied, tilting up her face for another. “I don’t know who said that money can’t buy love and happiness, but they were completely—”

“Gabriel!”

The assassin glanced around, then went perfectly still.

There was a man standing on the other side of the courtyard, waving a distant greeting with a tentative smile half-frozen on his face. It faded the longer he stood there, turning into something almost fearful. After a few seconds, he lowered the arm to his side.

Natasha stiffened instinctively, cringing against her husband. “Honey, who is that?” she asked quietly.

Gabriel never took his eyes off the man. “Wait for me by the car, will you?”

She obeyed without a second’s pause, keeping directly behind him as she doubled back the way they’d come and took the long way to the car. A phone was already in her hand and she was texting Julian, asking whether there were about to be any explosions in Leicester Square.

Gabriel stood there for a long moment, then started walking forward. The man recovered himself and joined him in the center, keeping a barrier of distance, though he tried again for a smile.

“It’s been a long time,” he said hesitantly.

The assassin nodded once, never breaking his gaze. “Yes, it has.”

Anthony Harrison. Tony, to his friends. There was a time when Gabriel would have counted himself among them. There was a time when the two saw each other almost every day.

Tony was a courier, one of the best in the business—entrusted with transporting the most sensitive of materials due to his unfailing discretion and hypersonic speed. He’d been one of Cromfield’s favorites before he’d done the unforgivable and gotten himself shot.
