CHAPTER EIGHT
Haven
âHaven?â
âI need a few minutes, Rhett. You just dumped a lot on me.â And thatâs putting it mildly.
His jaw twitches as he nods. âIâm going to walk the perimeter. Lock the door behind me. Iâll text before I get to the door. If you donât answer Iâll sleep in my car or on the porch. I wonât leave you and your sisters alone.â
âFine,â I answer, following him to the door. The sooner Iâm alone, the clearer I can think.
He waits on the porch until he hears the lock click, meets my gaze in the window then walks away.
I rest my forehead against the glass pane and let out a breath. It all comes back to my father. Iâm in this mess because of him and have very few choices. Itâs either marry the bully whoâs trying to force me, or my motherâs friendâno, make that acquaintance.
Who could possibly be expected to make a choice in a situation like this?
Theyâre both virtual strangers, my father, too. I no longer have any idea of who or what he was. Crime syndicate? Trafficking? Heâs obviously not the business man I thought.
I cross to the counter and take a seat. Elbows bent, I cup the sides of my head in my palms and try to sort it all out.
Rhett seems genuine and Iâm willing to believe he will absolutely protect me and the girls, but I donât know him. As flustered as his confession made me, the timing of it before I said âI doâ is a plus in his favor. And I donât even want to consider how attracted I am to him.
When it comes to Louis, just the thought overwhelms me. I can feel in my gut heâs bad news.
I pull up my emails on my phone and see the email stream and attached document from Reggie. The last paragraph is her chastising him for refusing to add a clause concerning alimony should we divorce.
Even a fool could see Rhett is protecting us and not himself.
He could have maintained the lie about my mother. He could have left himself open for a settlement when we divorce, he could have demanded no alimony.
Sure, he deceived me, but not with malice.
I drum my fingers on the counter wondering if there is another way out of this situation. Am I saying yes to the marriage contract simply to have access to my inheritance? Is it to save me from a potential forced marriage to Louis?
Or am I agreeing because Iâm attracted to Rhett, my knight in shining armor?
I sigh because I know the attraction is a big part of it. Iâm inexperienced, but Iâm not blind. I see how he looks at me when he doesnât think I notice. Even I couldnât miss his erection when he left before dinner to check the perimeter. If I was instantly attracted to him, then it is possible he was instantly attracted to me, right? Or am I fooling myself?
Even so, itâs still just a marriage of convenience.
