CHAPTER EIGHT

Haven

“Haven?”

“I need a few minutes, Rhett. You just dumped a lot on me.” And that’s putting it mildly.

His jaw twitches as he nods. “I’m going to walk the perimeter. Lock the door behind me. I’ll text before I get to the door. If you don’t answer I’ll sleep in my car or on the porch. I won’t leave you and your sisters alone.”

“Fine,” I answer, following him to the door. The sooner I’m alone, the clearer I can think.

He waits on the porch until he hears the lock click, meets my gaze in the window then walks away.

I rest my forehead against the glass pane and let out a breath. It all comes back to my father. I’m in this mess because of him and have very few choices. It’s either marry the bully who’s trying to force me, or my mother’s friend—no, make that acquaintance.

Who could possibly be expected to make a choice in a situation like this?

They’re both virtual strangers, my father, too. I no longer have any idea of who or what he was. Crime syndicate? Trafficking? He’s obviously not the business man I thought.

I cross to the counter and take a seat. Elbows bent, I cup the sides of my head in my palms and try to sort it all out.

Rhett seems genuine and I’m willing to believe he will absolutely protect me and the girls, but I don’t know him. As flustered as his confession made me, the timing of it before I said ‘I do’ is a plus in his favor. And I don’t even want to consider how attracted I am to him.

When it comes to Louis, just the thought overwhelms me. I can feel in my gut he’s bad news.

I pull up my emails on my phone and see the email stream and attached document from Reggie. The last paragraph is her chastising him for refusing to add a clause concerning alimony should we divorce.

Even a fool could see Rhett is protecting us and not himself.

He could have maintained the lie about my mother. He could have left himself open for a settlement when we divorce, he could have demanded no alimony.

Sure, he deceived me, but not with malice.

I drum my fingers on the counter wondering if there is another way out of this situation. Am I saying yes to the marriage contract simply to have access to my inheritance? Is it to save me from a potential forced marriage to Louis?

Or am I agreeing because I’m attracted to Rhett, my knight in shining armor?

I sigh because I know the attraction is a big part of it. I’m inexperienced, but I’m not blind. I see how he looks at me when he doesn’t think I notice. Even I couldn’t miss his erection when he left before dinner to check the perimeter. If I was instantly attracted to him, then it is possible he was instantly attracted to me, right? Or am I fooling myself?

Even so, it’s still just a marriage of convenience.
