CLICK TIP

Always include your business’s name, address, and phone number on every page of your website. Once customers have drilled a few pages down into your site, they don’t want to have to backtrack all the way back to your homepage just to get your contact information.

Selling from a Website

It used to be that businesses used websites mainly as marketing pieces—people came to the site to view your products, then either called an order in or printed out a order form from the site and faxed their order to you. Those days are almost gone. Customers expect to be able to sit at their computer and not only see what you have to offer but also to be able to order it right then and there. If they can’t, there is a good chance you are going to lose them to another site where they can.

Online ordering is covered in detail in Chapter 7, but right now you need to know that the two key attributes your site needs—and that your designer or your template will set you up with—are a shopping cart for customers to collect their items in and a secure way to pay for them.
