Vic grimaced as he rolled behind another parked car. This was just what he needed. They’d been so close to relative safety. Close to being able to breathe for at least a moment before heading out of this city once and for all.

But Nailz…freaking Nailz, of all people, had to go making trouble for him. But that was fine. He’d thinned out this group decently enough. By now, there were only four of them. Just four street thugs between him and his goal. He’d faced far tougher odds and come out on top. This didn’t even crack his top ten.

“The fuck is he?” one of the gang members called out to the other three.

“You see him?” another cried as Vic silently slipped himself underneath a nearby utility truck.

The large vehicle held just enough space to accommodate Vic’s bulky frame, and it would serve as the perfect way to draw them farther in. Close-quarters combat was where Vic had always excelled. He liked to get up close and personal with his enemies, to end them quickly and efficiently in an instantly verifiable manner.

“Nah, he ain’t over here,” one of the others yelled, this one closer to Vic’s location.

That’s it, he thought. Little closer, asshole.

Vic wasn’t an impatient person, especially not on the battlefield. He believed that a clean and confirmed kill was worth the work it took. He had no issue laying in wait underneath the massive vehicle, relaxing until he had the opportune time to strike.

Lying there on the ground was oddly comforting. The hard surface felt nice on his spine, and Vic began to suddenly become very aware of the fact that he hadn’t slept in well over a day and a half. It was something his nephew had pointed out several times since the whole world went to hell. But Vic wasn’t about to close his eyes. Not then and not now. Not until he’d seen them safe and sound out of this city in the nick of time.

Vic had seen it before, the terrifying impact of an EMP on a far smaller community. Within days, the population was at each other’s throats. There was massive bloodshed, the kind people Stateside never get to hear about. Much like everything Vic and Daniel touched back then, it was classified beyond classified.

That was the day the Vena brothers had learned about the destructive force of an EMP. In their debriefing, a superior officer had laid out what they had seen and given them the official mumbo jumbo about it. Vic had little knowledge of engineering or any kind of techno-babble garbage, but what he had taken away from the meeting was that a large-scale EMP attack could be unleashed not just on a community or even a state—but an entire nation. Every continental state in the union clicked off simultaneously, destroying American life as sit was known.

The way the officer had made it sound to them was that this doomsday scenario wasn’t just possible; it was likely—borderline assured to happen someday.
