Chapter 12
Wells, Nevada was beautiful. The small town looked peaceful; the wind was blowing lightly as it eased through the car window, and the air was fresh and clean as it entered my nostrils. I took a deep breath, inhaled the air, closed my eyes, and opened them again. I stopped at a gas station, opened the glove compartment, and got out more money for gas. After pumping the gas, I got back in and headed towards the address. I could not find it, so I had to pull over and ask for directions. I put the car in park and stopped the first car I saw.
“Excuse me, sir. I am looking for the home of Jeremy Bland.”
“Jeremy Bland?” the man said as he looked over and asked the person on the other side of him. They talked for a few moments before he turned back to me and replied, “Sorry. Can’t help you.”
Then, he drove off.
I looked around and saw a woman and her two children. I drove over and said,
“Excuse me. Do you know where a Jeremy Bland lives?”
“I don’t give out that information, miss,” she said as she drove off in a hurry.
“Miss, I hear you are looking for Jeremy Bland. Is he in some kind of trouble?” a man approached me and asked.
“No sir. He is family, and this is my first time out here. You can say I am lost. Can you help me?” I replied.
“Yeah, I know Bland. His place is about fifteen minutes from here,” the man answered.
“Sir, could you be more specific?” I asked with a nice warm smile.
“Sure, you see that signal light?”
I looked where he was pointing and said, “Yes.”
“Well, take the left at that signal light and go ten minutes on that highway. When you get to a four way stop, take the right, and it should be the first blue house you come across,” he said.
“Thank you so much,” I replied as I put the car in drive.
Before I could drive off, he asked, “Who did you say you were?”
“I’m a family member who has never been here before. Thank you,” I said as I drove off quickly.
Confident I had the right directions, I drove off in a hurry. I drove around for another hour, and I finally found the house. It did not look exactly like the house, but the color was very similar. If this was not the correct address, maybe whoever was inside would help me. I turned the car off, and no one came outside. I saw someone peeping out the window and a funny feeling swept over me. Click, click, click.
“Nikki, prepare yourself. This could be it,” Nicole said to me in a worried voice.
“Bitch, have I ever let us down? Fuck no, but thanks anyway. I’m a step ahead of you,” I replied.
“I was just saying Nikki. Don’t be so defensive. I’m on your side,” Nicole said.
“Well bitch, I can’t tell sometimes. Now shut the fuck up while I go check,” I retorted.
