HELENA

Rumors of what Ursula did are spreading like wildfire throughout the kingdom. I have searched for days looking for her, but no luck. When she left, I figured she would be back within a couple of hours, but it has been four days. I hope she is alright.

I sigh, opening the door to my house as I hear two voices raised, talking about something. I can’t quite hear them, so I move closer to the sounds, hoping to keep quiet.

“The time is now, brother. We must strike. The people are getting restless. What if Ursula comes back worse than she was before? What will that mean for our people?” I hear my Uncle Triston ask.

“She is but a child, Triton. She doesn’t know the power she wields. We can teach her. Let her father and I deal with it, when she gets back,” my father pleads with him.

“You mean, if she gets back. We have sent out party after party looking for her and no one has found her. There has to be a reason. Either she is dead, the humans caught her, or she is not coming back. The time is now, Mathios,” Triston says.

“For what, Triston? What you are planning, what those rebels are planning, is treason. The Krakens are chosen by the Gods and Goddesses to rule over us. There is a reason for that, Triston,” my father whisper yells at my uncle.

“To be cruel and treat us all like slaves? You live in the slums, Mathios. You are the highest ranking guard in the whole kingdom and you live in the SLUMS!” Triston’s voice is getting louder and louder.

“I choose to live here. I have three wives, and many children. We could not afford something this size in the other districts. We made this decision as a family,” my father is angry and you can hear it in his voice.

“You may choose to live here, but it’s wrong and you know it,” Triston replies.

With a heavy sigh, my father brings his hand up to the bridge of his nose and pinches. He is going to have one massive headache after my uncle leaves.

“I don’t agree with what you and the rebels are doing, Triton. I am the Captain of the Royal Guard. Sworn to protect and serve the Kraken family 'til my dying breath. I took that oath, and I will uphold that oath. I will protect them at all cost.” My father then turns to leave, but stops and says, “I love you, brother, so, please, don’t make me choose. Because it will be my oath every time.”

I see he is coming my way. I duck back behind the corner of the hallway and wait 'til he passes. I quickly swim back down the hall to see my uncle leaving my father's office.

“Helena, what a surprise. How are you?” he asks, nonchalauntly.

“I’m fine,” I grit out through my teeth. “Just got back from helping them search for Ursula.”

“It is a sadness that we can’t find her.
