In the back of the garden were some clay pitchers with strange markings etched into them. They looked like runes, but none of them looked familiar to me. Not from Celtic history at school, nor from depictions of demon runes from my incantation books.

“You can now summon stronger demons than when you first arrived.” There was a certain satisfaction in his voice. I waited. “It’s also possible to lock up these demons and keep them until you need them later.” He took one of the jars and showed me the runes. “These runes are ancient, older even than the summoning runes commonly used today. Few still know them, but they are very powerful and can control a demon.”

“Like a circle?” I asked, my curiosity taking the better of me, in spite of myself.

“These are much stronger than a circle. A circle is only as strong as the will and concentration of the summoner. With these runes you won’t waste energy on that anymore.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Can’t you make a circle with those runes so you can still talk to the demon? I don’t understand why you want to put them in earthen tupperware.”

“The runes hold a command. They paralyze the demon so that it can do nothing apart from the task you give him. And you can transport them in the jugs. In a circle it is stuck to that location only.”

“So how do you summon the demon?”

“Straight into the jars. It’s a slightly different technique.” Ruben put the jar back on the floor. “I’ll show you.”

He took a knife from between the stack of jugs. I hadn’t seen it before.

“Watch,” he said, holding up his index finger. He put the tip of the knife on his fingertip. I leaned over to get a better look. “Now you make a copy of the top rune on your finger.” As he spoke he drew a wavy line from the tip of his index finger almost to the palm of his hand and then straightened up again so that each wave was broken by the straight line. I breathed in a hiss. That looked painful. But Ruben didn’t make a sound. “This rune is the same on all jars,” Ruben continued as if he hadn’t just cut himself to the point of bleeding. “While pronouncing the words ‘bo elay‘, place your finger on top of this rune.“ He took one of the jars and showed me how to place my index finger on the rune. First I needed to place the tip of my finger down, and then I had to curve my finger around the neck of the bottle, right on top of the rune that was carved around it. As Ruben performed it, he uttered the words, “Bo elay.“ Immediately the jar took on a reddish-orange glow, as if it came straight from the oven in which it had been baked. I watched wide-eyed as a small tuft of smoke drifted up from the bottle. Ruben corked it and the smoke disappeared.
