Chapter Fourteen

I moved over to the window and peered out into the near-darkness. There was a drop between the window and the ground below, but nothing we couldn’t handle . . . well, nothing we wouldn’t be able to handle if Harrison hadn’t passed out.

Hurrying back to him, I put our phones into my bag and then bent over to throw Harrison over my shoulder.

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have considered Harrison heavy, but whatever they drugged us with made both of our bodies uncooperative, and I swayed under his weight.

I managed to get him to the window, propping him on the sill as I shoved the window open. At least no expense had been spared on the windows because it slid quietly and easily.

A dizzy spell hit me again, and I clutched at the window, trying to keep my balance. The feeling passed but left my head fuzzy. As I fought back a yawn, I fed Harrison’s feet out of the window before lowering him as best I could. With his body hovering now, I let go and he fell softly to the ground.

It might have been a hot summer and the ground baked dry, but the house had been built under pine trees, so the forest floor was covered in fallen pine needles.

Climbing onto the windowsill, I turned and started to lower myself, just as another wave of dizziness hit me. My grip slipped, and I fell to the ground, narrowly missing Harrison. I landed heavily, something digging into my side.

The landing had us both sliding. The drop was further than I expected because the house was built on a slope. I hit a tree, and just managed to grab onto Harrison before he disappeared into the darkness.

“Harrison? Are you still alive?” I prodded his side.

When he muttered something incomprehensible, I let out a sigh of relief and slumped onto my back.

We had slid far enough away from the house and into the undergrowth that I figured we had a few minutes before we needed to move. I could rest . . .

No, you can’t.

No, I couldn’t. No one seemed to have noticed we were missing yet, but Natasha would soon send people out to look for us. We had the cover of darkness on our side, for now.

Groaning at the effort while still trying to keep as quiet as possible, I pushed myself into a sitting position and pulled Harrison’s phone out of my bag.

A massive, splintered crack ran across the screen, and it wouldn’t turn on.

Crap.

Tossing it back into my bag, I pulled out my own. This one was cracked too, but it was still on. It unlocked and seemed to still be working.

I might not have Senator Sinclair’s number, but I did have Leigh-Ann’s. I could just get her to tell her dad—

Pain jolted through my brain, waking it up as it scraped at my nerve endings.

I couldn’t get her to tell her dad anything.

The goddamn covenant.

Crap, crap, crap.

Although the pain in my head was resonating, whatever drugs we’d been given had left me feeling foggy.
