Chapter Thirteen

Maxima

They invited me to dinner, the alphas. Somewhere outside of the confines of the pack. Sort of like a date, something I’d never had with Jacob. Since I arrived in baggage claim and saw them waiting for me, my life in my former pack had already become less vivid, my marriage to Jacob less real in my mind.

Sitting between Felix, who drove, and Tihalt on the bench seat of the big pickup truck, I thought I should feel guilt at putting my former life behind me so quickly. Elephant in the room aside, he was a good mate and took much of the pressure of my father and the other pack leaders away from me. I was mated and therefore had fulfilled half of my destiny as a female. As the months went by, and I did not swell with child, some of the pressure returned. My father wanted to know when he could expect a grandson. As his only child, I was expected to be a boy when I was born, thereby disappointing my daddy from the moment I was born. My mother did not live long after, and Father could easily have remarried.

But, despite his expectations for me, Father had never remated. Mother had been his fated, and he had been unable to bring himself to find another. Which meant, he was depending on me to provide a “real” heir.

Felix and Tihalt were speaking with one another over my head, their voices soothing but somehow also erotic, awakening things Jacob never had. Poor guy, his father had put him into a mating with me where none ever existed. Or should have. We were not fated. I was not even his type, beyond the strong friendship we shared. Had he not died, in another year or so, Father would have found a way to end what was between us. He wanted, no, he needed that grandson we would never have been able to give him.

“Maxima?” Felix asked. “Tihalt was wondering if you like seafood.”

“Oh yes. I haven’t had much of it beyond trout and bass and things from the stream, but once I had lobster…” On my honeymoon with Jacob who was still lingering in my mind despite the lack of a physical aspect to our relationship.

“Then you’ll love this place. They are the one place in the area that flies in fresh seafood daily.” From Tihalt’s tone, I gathered he was a big fan. “We can order the seafood tower so you can try all the best if you like? That way, next time you’ll know what you like best.”

Okay…my wolf was pleased at the fact that our mates were taking us out for a meal and thrilled at Tihalt’s mention of “next time.” I’d only been here a day, and we hadn’t mated officially or at all yet, but she was sure we were in the right place with the right people.

Our people.

Mates.

She’d never said that when we were with Jacob, although she’d never said anything negative, either.
