The cut on her chin hadn’t been nearly as bad as everyone had seemed to think it was. The doctor at the emergency room had cleaned it, glued it and pressed a gauze bandage over the area.

Nothing she couldn’t have done herself.

She fingered the bandage as she paced her hotel room. Bradley had escorted her there after she had given her statement and chosen Martin Roker from a picture lineup—with the added explanation that the man stalking her had been a carbon copy, not Martin Roker himself, of course. Bradley had insisted on walking her to her room and checking every corner of it. Then he had stood on the threshold, his jaw dark with a five-o’clock shadow, his eyes red-rimmed with fatigue, and made her promise to stay locked inside until he returned the following afternoon.

For their...

Appointment?

Meeting?

Date?

She shied away from the last word, refusing to acknowledge it. She didn’t date. Michael had cured her of the desire for male companionship.

At least, that was what she always told herself.

Her college sweetheart, Michael had been exactly the man she had thought she wanted in her life—charismatic and charming, caring and compassionate. His faith had seemed stronger than hers, his understanding of the Bible impressive. He had taught men’s Bible studies at college and been a youth leader at his church.

She had fallen for him quickly when they’d met at church during her sophomore year. He’d been a law student, getting ready to take the bar. She’d been studying communications, hoping for a career in journalism. He had swept her off her feet with phone calls and flowers and little notes to tell her he was thinking about her.

It had felt like the real deal, the happily-ever-after.

They’d married two days after she’d graduated. He had passed the bar the following week. On paper, they worked. A power couple ready to make a difference in the world. She had adored him, and she had thought he’d felt the same about her.

She had been wrong.

He had cheated on her twice during their short marriage. She had forgiven him the first time. The second time, he had chosen to walk away. Five years of marriage, and he’d fallen in love with someone more exciting, more interesting, more passionate. At least, that was the way he’d described it. Sasha figured he had simply gotten bored with his straitlaced life. He had walked away from the Bible studies and joined a fitness club. He had traded Bible quotes in for inspirational speeches. He practiced law, but his real passion was encouraging people to live their best lives, and his best life had not included staying with someone who believed in traditional marriage and traditional values.

Boring.

Michael had used the word over and over again as he had explained why he was packing his bags and filing for divorce.

She had wanted to deny it, but there had been a small part of her that had thought he might be right. She had been in her twenties and working hard to balance being married with building her career.
