CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
Coming Clean
Kiru recovered consciousness while he was being brought on a gurney over to the medical ward. Despite the enchantment on the arena which prevented life-threatening injuries, Kiruâs neck felt like a tree that had been assaulted by a lumberjack. William was still conscious, however, and he quickly brought his master up-to-date on what had happened. Zaneâs team had been declared the winners. Shocker there. After that declaration, the enraged Warren had kept attacking, which was the source of Kiruâs current neck pain.
Escobert had to personally intervene to stop the barbarian from breaking through the enchantment and decapitating the psion. The dwarf subdued Warren in a flash with ease, breaking the manâs left leg for his insubordination. He then dismissed the class and forced Warren to limp to the medical ward rather than being helped.
William cackled at that punishment because, in truth, what the general did to him was worse than what happened to anyone else. Kiru groaned as he craned his neck to see Brunhilda and the drakonid being carried in gurneys alongside him. Both were unconscious but thankfully only seemed to have minor wounds.
They were attended by the schoolâs physician, a human man who was a cleric of Odin. Brunhilda, during one of her impromptu sermons about Hlin, told Kiru to always be wary of those who follow Odin. They were zealous for knowledge, just like their patron deity, and were prone to doing unsavory things in order to obtain it. All of them had to cut out one of their own eyes, too. When they were brought into the medical ward, the one-eyed cleric looked upon the trio, then zeroed in on Kiru.
âOoh, a half-elf!â he said excitedly. âItâs not often I get to study one of your kind! There are all sorts of things I can learn from your anatomy.â The man gazed on the psion with hungry eyes as if he were a slab of meat.
âEh ⦠yes,â Escobert answered for Kiru. âThese three were injured in part of a sanctioned practice match today. They just need some simple healing, and then they should be on their way. There is one more, though. Heâs on his way and will need a broken leg mended.â
âYes, yes, of course.â The cleric waved the dwarf off. âBut firstââ He pulled a monocle over his lone eye and began examining Kiru. ââI cannot see most of the body, due to this ⦠impressive elven armor,â he said in admiration. âI must know, what is it made of?â
âI donât know,â Kiru answered.
âNot a problem,â the cleric said. âIâll analyze it after my examination is complete.â He continued scanning Kiru. âYour body appears to be disproportionately distributed. The musculature of your body under your armor indicates a well-developed form, but your hands and neck have mild-to-moderate muscular atrophy. Maybe you have some rare muscular disease, due to your mixed heritage! Curious,â he said with restrained but obvious glee. It was clear that the armor was still doing its job in concealing Kiruâs atrophied body underneath.
